Gary Stuhler chalks up his 132nd Late Model win at Hagerstown Speedway

HAGERSTOWN, MD. – From a third heat win, starting second with a three car invert to leading the Late Model feature all the way and parking in victory lane, Gary Stuhler was on top of his game Saturday night at Hagerstown Speedway/Dirt Capitol. It was career 132nd at the track for all time feature leader and National Dirt Hall of Fame veteran from Greencastle.

“It’s just a big team effort,” Stuhler said.” We had a lot of help over the winter. The boss man decided to spend a lot of money. They’ve given us the best equipment so all I have to do is do my job. I have to thank all my crew and Ronnie Stuckey from Team 20 for making it all happen. I’m just glad that I won.”

Bobby Beard, who finished second the previous week, used a move through lapped traffic to come out on top in the Malloy Ford Late Model Sportsman with Mike Corbin posting his third triumph in the first four races in the K.Lynn Management Pure Stocks. Two time and defending champion, Gary Proctor picked up his first win of the season in the Mason Dixon Auto Auction Hobby Stocks.

Stuhler quickly launched his racer to the late model lead as Brad Omps, in a brand new racer, passed Devin Friese for second. On the third lap while Roy Deese Jr and previous week’s winner Rick Eckert battled for fourth, Eckert’s car suddenly veered left into the fence across from the flagman’s stand.

Stuhler reassumed the lead on the restart with Deese Jr. taking the runner up spot from Omps the next circuit. Marvin Winters came from 11th to get the fourth position from Barry Miller on the 11th lap who then had Kyle Lear (12th) and Jerry Bard (15th) battling for his position.

Stuhler began through the rear of the field on the 15th circuit and was slowed some as Deese Jr. began to chop into his lead. Stuhler drove on and carried a 1.759 second advantage at the checkered. Omps was closely followed by Winters with Lear holding down the fifth spot.

With four car inverted in the Late Model Sportsman feature, Robbie Black and Beard occupied the front row as Black grabbed the lead from the outside. Previous season winners Paul Cursey and Scott Palmer were into the next positions by the third lap. Palmer quickly advanced into the runner up spot in a seventh lap restart and ready to challenge Black until looping his car in the second turn without stopping but falling to seventh as Beard took over the runner up spot.

Black continued to lead until arriving at the rear of the field as Beard sized up the situation and went to the outside when Black got held up entering the third turn. Beard quickly pulled away and never looked back until reaching the finish. Black, Cursey, Chad Myers (9th) and Wes Alleman completed the top five. Beard dedicated the win to his mother who just got out of the hospital.

Brian Miller advanced to the pole when Kenny Dillon’s mechanical issue kept him pitside for the Pure Stock start as Miller moved to the front over outside pole sitter Mike Corbin. Corbin began to pull away from Miller while Jamie Zentmyer battled for third with Chris Ebersole and previous week’s winner Craig Parrill. The race continued under green as Corbin picked up his season third win by just over three seconds ahead of Miller and Parrill who took third on the tenth lap. Bryan Walls and Zentmyer were next.

On the opening lap of the Hobby Stock feature, several cars got together on the opening lap and littered the front stretch as ninth starting Gary Proctor made it through unscathed. The others rejoined the rear of the field as Proctor led Tom Caravello who pulled alongside Proctor several times. Ralph Hansberger charged from the rear after the initial incident and passed Caravello with three to go but Proctor recorded a two length victory. Caravello was third followed by Bryan Neff and William Crook.
