SCOTT PALMER CONTINUES HIS WINNING STREAK TO FOUR CONSECUTIVE IN THE LATE MODEL SPORTSMAN

HAGERSTOWN, MD. – Wet or dry, it makes no difference to Scott Palmer as he continued his winning streak in the special 30-lap Malloy Ford Late Model Sportsman event at Hagerstown Speedway/Dirt Capitol and picked up $1,500 for his fourth consecutive triumph and overall fifth of the season.

Promoter Ernie Davis gambled and won following a lengthy rain storm that hit the speedway mid-afternoon and continued until there was a saturated track and high humidity. The track was brought back with the help of all racers running it in to make a highly competitive and fast surface.

Starting third, Palmer, of Greencastle, PA, dropped to seventh on the second lap but came on strong in the second half of the race to grab the lead from race long leader Kyle Lee with three to go.

“I let my crew chief make the call on the tires and I was really doubting that the first half of the race,” Palmer said. “I went from fourth to about seventh there and finally they came to life and it worked out well.”

Starting off the evening by turning the quickest time trial lap of 19.630 seconds, Palmer sat third in the starting grid with Paul Cursey and Kyle Lee on the front row. Lee took off like a jet and was holding a line around the top with Cursey several car lengths back while Bobby Beard passed Jimmy Jesmer Jr. for third on the 11th lap and then became the caution five laps later when he slowed with a right rear flat.

Lee took off on the restart while Palmer lined up fourth and charged into the runner up spot as they caught rear traffic on the 23rd and again two laps later. Running second, Palmer was able to survey the situation and slipped past Lee with three to go. The caution waved with one lap to go with Palmer driving on to post the win by .604 seconds over Lee and ninth starter Robbie Black who grabbed third from Cursey on the final lap. Rodney Walls ended fifth.

“Kind of like last week, I really didn’t think I was going to get that tonight,” Palmer said. “The last half of the race, whether it‘s 30 laps tonight or 20 laps, seems like that is when my car really comes to life. Again lapped traffic played into it a little bit. The line we were trying to get around that lapped traffic I think was where the 2T (Lee) wanted to be and it worked out for me.”

Hagerstown’s Brian Miller lined up on the pole for the K-Lynn Management Pure Stock 20-lap Spring Championship event with third starter Chris Ebersole moving into the runner up spot on the second lap. Miller continued to hold a comfortable lead the first half until the caution came out for four time winner Brian Corbin who coasted to a stop. Miller wasn’t shaking Ebersole as easily but continued on to post his first win since June 2, 2012 as Ebersole finished second 1.57 seconds back. Craig Parrill grabbed third in the closing laps over Brian Luttrell with Keith Koontz ending fifth.

“It was a long hard journey to get here,” Miller said. “I’m used to winning a couple times a year. This is the first in three years, so it was tough.”

Marshall McMullen posted his second Mason Dixon Auto Auction Hobby Stock feature of the season as he led from the pole but got high in four on the opening lap with Jamie Mills leading the first lap as McMullen dropped to fifth. McMullen charged to second by the fifth lap and kept the pressure on Mills until gaining the top spot on the 11th lap and continuing on to win by ten lengths over Mills. Gary Proctor, Ralph Hansberger and Jason Sarver were next.

Charlie Summers battled in the top three the entire Classic Car feature and scored his first ever win. The feature got off to a rough start when the cars of Wes Brown, Dorsey Weaver and Steve Clemo all crashed on the front stretch. Steve Cantwell led from the pole with Joe Brown taking over on the fifth with Neal Reamer in the battle and leading the 11th lap before Brown retook the lead. Summers finally pulled ahead on the 16th to show the way over Brown and Reamer.

“I’m excited,” Summers said. “I had a good time. It was a great race, my car was great, it was just hooked up tonight. It was my night.”
