Best finish of 5th for Sanders in King of America XIII prelims
Nearly a month after it was been postponed due to weather, King of America XIII finally got underway for Rodney Sanders and the rest of the Summit United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) competitors at Humboldt Speedway on Thursday evening.
Sanders was one of 53 USMTS entrants with their sights on a $3,000 first-place payout at the quarter-mile oval in Humboldt, Kansas, during the first night of racing. Sanders finished fourth in his heat race and third in his B-Main to roll off 18th in the 33-lap main event. He climbed to a 12th-place result.
On Friday, 53 USMTS Modifieds again filled the Humboldt pit area with a $5,000 winner’s share up for grabs. Sanders steered to third in his heat and fourth in his consolation race, starting him 20th in the feature. He set a torrid pace in the 40-lapper, having charged to fourth by the time the white flag flew. He ultimately finished fifth behind Jake Timm, Darron Fuqua, Jim Chisholm and Jacob Hobscheidt. Sanders earned the FK Rod Ends Hard Charger Award for his efforts.
The next day, the Saturday finale brought 51 USMTS competitors to the track for a chance to be crowned “King of America.” Sanders came home fifth in his heat and second in his B-Feature to claim the 15th starting position in the $12,000-to-win main event.
However, the 60-lap race was rained out with just two circuits completed. A make-up date will be announced soon.
