Best finish of 9th for Stevens in World of Outlaws run at Deer Creek
Tyler Stevens continued his swing through the Upper Midwest from Thursday through Saturday as he raced with the World of Outlaws CASE Construction Equipment Late Model Series in the NAPA Auto Parts Gopher 50 at Deer Creek Speedway.
Thursday’s Independence Day night of racing was rained out at the 3/8-mile clay oval in Spring Valley, Minnesota, setting up two prelims on Friday with more than 30 cars on hand.
For the first, Stevens qualified second in his group and topped an impressive field in his heat race. He started on the pole in the 30-lap, $7,000-to-win feature and led the first nine laps of his first-ever World of Outlaws A-Main. He ultimately came home ninth in his Pitts Fuel Investments No. 2 Super Late Model due to utilizing a non-optimal tire for the track.
In the day’s second set of races, Stevens finished third in his heat and was running near the front in the Last Chance Showdown when he blew an engine. He turned in a 15th-place result, ending his evening before the day’s second $7,000-to-win 30-lapper.
With his performance in the first prelim having locked him into Saturday’s $50,000-to-win finale, Stevens climbed aboard the Keith Hammett-owned No. 29 Super Late Model for the remainder of the Gopher 50 event.
He won his dash on Saturday and started the 75-lap feature from the ninth position. He was running around 10th when the car blew a power-steering line, relegating him to a 24th-place finish.
