Thompson notches best result of 4th on Salute to Veterans Tour

From Wednesday through Saturday, Cody Thompson participated in his favorite multi-day racing program of the year: the IMCA-sanctioned Hunting with Heroes Salute to Veterans Tour. During the three-day slate, Thompson drove a specially wrapped No. 25c Modified saluting the U.S. Army.

The tour kicked off on Wednesday at Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer, Iowa, where 29 IMCA Modified competitors sought the $2,000 winner’s share. Thompson claimed the fourth spot in his heat race on the 3/8-mile oval, starting him third in the 25-lap A-Main. He came home with a fourth-place result after spending much of the race in the runner-up position, but fell back after choosing the inside on the final restart. He followed Ethan Braaksma, Tim Ward and Jake McBirnie under the checkered flag, with Kelly Shryock rounding out the top five.

The next night, the tour moved to Algona, Iowa’s 4/10-mile Kossuth County Speedway for a $3,500-to-win program attracting 24 IMCA Modified racers. Thompson suffered two part failures, resulting in a sixth-place result with a DNF in his heat, and another DNF in the 25-lap A-Main. He came home 24th in the feature after starting from the 23rd position.

Following a day off on Friday, the tour wrapped up at Boone (Iowa) Speedway on Saturday evening. Twenty-four IMCA Modifieds again filled the pit area, this time with a $3,000 first-place payout on the line. Thompson started third and finished fourth in the evening’s Race of Champions on the 3/8-mile track, trailing Nick Meyer, Joel Rust and Jeremy Mills across the start-finish line. McBrirne came home fifth in the special race.

Thompson also drove from eighth to third in his heat and started 15th in the 30-lap main event. However, he once again ran into trouble and recorded a DNF. He was scored as finishing 24th.
