ONE FOR THE THUMB: Rico Abreu Makes it Five High Limit Wins in 2024 on Friday at Skagit
In a rematch of the Friday before at Silver Dollar Speedway's 70th Gold Cup Race of Champions, it was once again Tanner Thorson vs. Rico Abreu for the win on this Friday - now at Washington's Sage Fruit Skagit Nationals.
Thorson, chasing his first "official" victory with Kubota High Limit Racing win - as last week was a split-field prelim - led the opening seven laps aboard his Rod Gross Motorsports #88 before Abreu slipped by on Lap 8.
Even after Abreu assumed command, Thorson kept the #24 honest until heartbreak struck late in the running and he was eliminated from contention when a slowing Greg Hamilton left the #88 with nowhere to go and contact sent him to the Rod End Supply Work Area.
Both Brad Sweet and James McFadden rose to the occasion and readied to attack Abreu for control of the lead, but neither were able to make a move stick in the closing stages of the 30-lapper.
Abreu held on for his second-career win at Skagit Speedway, his fifth win of the year and ninth of his career with Kubota High Limit Racing, and his eighth overall win of the 2024 season.
It was just enough to sneak Abreu into a lock-in spot as he joined Brad Sweet, James McFadden, and Justin Sanders as the four drivers locked-in to Saturday's $102,626-to-win Sage Fruit Skagit Nationals.
Sweet and McFadden punctuated their lock-in performances with podium finishes on Friday, ahead of fellow top-10 finishers Corey Day, Cole Macedo, Justin Sanders, Brent Marks, Cory Eliason, Jacob Allen, and Shane Golobic,
