Cody Thompson shows speed at South Dakota Fall Nationals
A stop at Jefferson, South Dakota’s Interstate Speedway kicked off Cody Thompson’s aggressive October racing slate on Friday and Saturday. Thompson has been strong in recent weeks, and in the second annual South Dakota Fall Nationals, he proved his Reich Painting & Decorating Co. Inc. No. 25c Modified was one to beat.
Racing in the second annual program began on Friday with qualifying at the 5/16-mile track. Thompson won his first heat race and finished as runner-up in his second. His strong results in a field of more than 25 IMCA Modifieds earned him the pole for Saturday’s $2,024-to-win feature.
Thompson led early in the 24-lap main event but was unsure which line to choose on the track and eventually relinquished the lead. Later in the race, he cut a tire due to contact with a lapped car, relegating him to an 18th-place result after posting a DNF. However, the results were not indicative of the team’s strong performance.
