Race for Hope 71 yields pair of podium finishes for Thompson

Cody Thompson traveled to Locust Grove, Arkansas, over the weekend to compete in the three-day Race for Hope 71 at Mooney Starr’s Batesville Motor Speedway. He grabbed two third-place finishes at the 3/8-mile track in a strong field of IMCA Modifieds.

When racing began in the eighth annual event on Thursday evening, 51 Modified teams were in the Batesville pit area. Thompson steered his Premier Industries No. 25c car to victory in his heat race, starting him fifth on the grid in the $2,500-to-win feature. He climbed two spots in the 25-lapper and finished third behind Tom Berry Jr. and Curtis Cook. Roger Witt took the fourth spot and Tim Ward came home fifth.

On Friday, Thompson fought a tight condition throughout the night and could not transfer into the night’s feature through his heat. His evening concluded with a third-place result in his B-Main, one spot shy of a berth in the 25-lap, $2,500-to-win main event.

Thompson returned to form on Saturday, starting with a second-place effort in his heat. He rolled off 14th in the night’s 71-lap, $7,500-to-win finale and had charged to third before the halfway point. He finished in third position, rounding out the podium behind Berry (who swept the weekend) and Jeff Taylor. Ward and Tanner Black finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
