Mitchell takes Spooky 50 victory in CCSDS season finale

TEXARKANA, Texas (10/21/24) – Jon Mitchell capped a stellar final weekend of the 2024 COMP Cams Super Dirt Series (CCSDS) season with a $5,000 triumph in Saturday’s Spooky 50 at Super Bee Speedway aboard his Team 5 Enterprise / Tommy Dowden Logging / Integra Racing Shocks No. 5 Late Model.

The 2012 series champion was impressive throughout the season-ending special at the quarter-mile oval in Chatham, Louisiana, en route to the event win.

“We’ve been on a dry spell for sure,” Mitchell said. “I knew we had one coming here before long, we got a pretty good car here now. This thing started getting one-lane there and I just tried not to mess up and take care of my right-rear tire. Man it feels good, I’m tellin’ ya it’s been a while, it makes you question yourself ... man, to hang that big check in the shop is bigger than the money, to tell you the truth.”

Mitchell opened the evening at the Louisiana oval by qualifying with the quickest time in the 20-car field, turning in a 15.217-second lap behind the wheel of his law enforcement-themed No. 5 Super Late Model. He went on to win his heat race from the pole and started the 40-lap main event from the top spot. He led every circuit to score his first feature victory of the year, his sixth career win with the series, and his first trip to a CCSDS victory lane since August 1, 2014.

Mitchell took the checkered flag 0.713 seconds ahead of Morgan Bagley, while Clayton Stuckey rounded out the podium. Kyle Beard and Shane Hebert finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

On Friday, Mitchell was also strong in the $5,000-to-win CCSDS program on First Responders Night at Texarkana 67 Speedway.

Competing among 25 entries at the quarter-mile oval in Texarkana, Arkansas, Mitchell set the third-quickest time in qualifying and won his heat after starting first. He rolled off from the third on the grid in the 40-lap feature and finished as runner-up, 1.154 seconds behind winner B.J. Robinson. Hebert, Logan Martin and Beard completed the top-five.

As a result of Mitchell’s pair of top-two weekend finishes, he jumped ahead one position in the 2024 CCSDS point standings and ended the year in the fourth spot.

Mitchell will sit idle this weekend before returning to Modified competition at Boothill Speedway in early November for the United States Modified Touring Series Battle at Boothill. A pair of $5,000-to-win events highlight the doubleheader weekend.
