Engine woes stop Sanders in Spooktacular
Rodney Sanders looked poised for a strong finish in the Spooktacular at 81 Speedway on Saturday. However, he fell victim to engine gremlins in the Summit USMTS Modified feature.
With a $5,000 winner’s share up for grabs, 29 USMTS competitors traveled to the 3/8-mile track in Park City, Kansas, for the fourth annual Spooktacular event. Sanders opened the night by steering his Wichita Tank Racing No. 20 Modified from sixth to third in his heat race. After the redraw, started on the pole in the 40-lap A-Main.
He led all but one of the main event's first 25 circuits and was out front when he suffered engine trouble, forcing him out of the race just past halfway. He recorded a 19th-place result.
With just four nights remaining on the 2024 USMTS schedule, Sanders sits third in the national point standings.
A USMTS Kansas doubleheader had been slated for the last weekend in October, but the 13th annual Jayhawk Classic at Kansas City's Lakeside Speedway was washed out.
