Laird Raceway
We Ran a Fast and Exciting Show on Thursday July 31st.
Recap for Thursday July 31, 2025
Thursday July 31st was the third racenight of the Laird Raceway 2025 season. We've had a couple weather related cancellations this season, but this night was ideal with mostly clear skies and moderate temperatures of about 22 degrees at race time, dropping to about 16 by the end of the night's race program. Fans filed in as race time approached with another large crowd attending along with another good car count for them to watch.
Opening ceremonies were held shortly after 7pm with Annette Bouchard singing the American and Canadian national anthems on the front stretch. Our evening race program was a bit different than most as we started with feature races in the NAPA Reyco Automotive Modified, and Equipment World Factory Four divisions to make up for their features missed because of a lighting failure on the evening of July 10th. There were no heats in either of those divisions to keep our race program within time constraints.
The night's race program was comparatively smooth with no major wrecks or delays. The tow truck and track crews had an easy night, only being seen a couple times through the night.
NAPA Reyco Automotive Modified Division:
There were 10 modifieds out on track for qualifying early in the evening, one of which was a new car to the track, #81 driven by Craig Seabrook. Craig has raced at Laird previously although it has been many years since he did so. Craig was out for the qualifying session but was missing a transponder so didn't record a time. Fast qualifier for the night was #61 Dustin Jackson.
The modifieds ran no heats and two 25 lap features for the night. The first feature was held right after opening ceremonies. Caution flew twice during the race, both for cars spinning; the first caution was right at the green flag, the second was on lap 21. #02 John Ross led the first couple laps then #22 JP Delpaggio took over and led the rest. #61 Dustin Jackson challenged Delpaggio throughout the race but was unable to get by.
In the second feature caution flew three times on laps 10, 20, and 23 all for spins. Jackson and Delpaggio both started in row three and by the end of lap 5 had both got around #84 Mark Laakso, #02 John Ross, #28 Mark Porpealia, and #78 Jason Herrington who all started in front of them. Jackson led the remainder of the laps to take the checkered flag in front of Delpaggio.
In the season's point standings Jackson remains in the lead, 21 points ahead of Herrington, 22 points ahead of Laakso, and 29 points ahead of #01 Jerry Ross.

In their first feature caution flew before the first lap was fully complete requiring a full restart. #13 Logan Lavoy led the first 5 laps until the caution flew a second time for a spin on track. After the restart #3 Chris Viotto took over the lead and ran that position to the end of the 20 lap event for the win.
Caution flew twice during the second 20 lap feature as well. During the middle portion of the race Viotto traded places for top spot with #16 Dyllen Sherrard. By 3/4 point of the race Viotto decisively took over the lead for the win, capturing his second feature win for the night.
In the season points standings Sherrard retains top place with 99 points. #27 Kohle Kennedy runs second 19 points back, #4 Kayleigh Tucker is 3rd, 22 points behind the leader and #08 Alex Lapensee is 4th, 25 points back.

Service Rentals and Sales Super Late Models:
There were eight Service Rentals and Sales Super Late Models in the pits at the beginning of the night, but only 7 of them were able to run. The points leader going into the night, #33 Jordan Rochetta suffered an irreparable breakdown during earlier hot laps and was unable to qualify or run either the heat or feature being held during the night. Out to race for the night were veteran drivers #90 Jay Palumbo and #50 Rob Hiiemaa, both for their first time at Laird this season.
Fast qualifier of the seven was #47 Jordan Sims. Fans saw a 10 lap heat and 25 lap feature during the night.
The heat ran fast and caution free with #90 Jay Palumbo taking the win over #15 Jake Irwin and #79 Roddy Bolduc. The caution was put out twice during the early part of the 25 lap feature with some ontrack spins. At the end, Palumbo got to carry the checkered flag for the second time. #47 Jordan Sims finished 2nd, and #50 Rob Hiiemaa took 3rd.
In the season points championship #47 Jordan Sims moved into top spot with 105 points. Running 2nd is #79 Roddy Bolduc 9 points back, 3rd is #826 Jordan Parniak 10 points behind, and 4th is #56 Mike Heinonen 11 points back. Jordan Rochetta, unable to run, dropped from 1st to 5th place, now 21 points behind Sims.

Highland Ford Factory Stock Division:
There were eleven Highland Ford Factory Stocks out for racing action during the night. Top qualifier was #80 Brad Bibeau with a time of 15.780 seconds, a new track record, breaking the record set last season by Tyler Praysner of 15.884 seconds. The division was split in two for a 10 lap heat each, then a 25 lap feature with all later on.
The first heat was with six cars. Caution flew once with less than a lap complete. #12 Owen Brown took the checkers, #711 Shanna Harten 2nd.
The second heat ran with 5 cars and was caution free. #4 Dale Tucker led the first 8 laps of the race then received a black flag for overrunning his qualifying time by more than a quarter second on 5 laps. Fast qualifier Brad Bibeau took the win, #77 Ed Lapish came up 2nd.
All eleven were out for their 25 lap feature later in the night. Caution flew three times during the race. The first caution was pulled out on lap on the initial lap with cars three wide on the backstretch into corner 3, jammed together into the corners, then Owen Brown ending up spinning out of corner 4. A full restart was held. #74 Brian Jobst left the track with three laps complete. The entire group ran side by side for the first 5 laps with #72 Teagan Lapish holding out front. They began to space apart over the next couple laps then caution flew as #33 Cody Champagne ran up against the back guardrail (or "rattled" down the guardrail as announcer Brazeau put it), spinning into corner 3. Champagne left the track after the incident.
After the restart #12 Owen Brown took over the lead from Lapish. The third caution of the race flew on lap 12 with #77 Ed Lapish spun at the top of corner 2 and #29 Xavier Carter rolling slowly along the backstretch; both were running towards the back of the field. Up to the time of the caution Brown was running a couple car lengths ahead of #4 Dale Tucker and #80 Brad Bibeau who were battling for second.
The remaining laps of the race ran caution free with Brown owning top place. On the restart Bibeau started outside of Tucker and took over 2nd place. Through the final laps Bibeau worked hard, inside and out to get past Brown. He was able to get alongside on the outside a couple times but couldn't get past. Brown took the checkered flag, Bibeau was 2nd, and Tucker was 3rd close behind. It was one of the best races of the night.
The points standings post race have Brown up front with 105 points. Second is #711 Shanna Harten with 85 points, 20 back. Third back is a close race with Dale Tucker in third, 25 points back; #29 Xavier Carter and #77 Ed Lapish both 26 points points back are tied in 4th/5th.

Intermission:
Lawnmower Racing courtesy of the Algoma Lawnmower Racing Association (ALMRA) was finally able to be run. The group struggled with water drainage from the infield track and finished some drainage upgrades during the off weeks. The track was extremely dry and the mowers spun up a lot of dust. Luckily there was a breeze blowing the dust away from fans, but it still made it difficult to watch. Out of the dust cloud emerged Darcy Reid as the winner.
Also during intermission a number of youngsters won hats, pillows and a couple tshirts for correctly answering some of Greg Brazeau's trivia questions. Also, a couple lucky kids went home with new bicycles that were given away during the night.
Our racenight ended a few minutes past 10 pm.
