Jankowiak Captures 37th U.S. Open at Lancaster; Wylie, Nova, and Bulger Score Sunday Wins
LANCASTER, N.Y. (September 28, 2025) – Second generation driver Andy Jankowiak from Tonawanda, NY won the 37th U.S. Open for the Tour-Type Modifieds at Lancaster Motorplex Sunday afternoon. For Jankowiak, it was his second Modified triumph, first since 2017, and 10th overall at the U.S. Open, putting him on top for all time victories at the prestigious event. Dustin Nova from Springville, NY wins his second straight Street Stock US Open championship. Scott Wylie from Blasdell, NY won the Late Model event for the first time in his career and fourth overall. Russ Bulger Jr from Buffalo, NY won the Rusty Diamond Cores Pro 4 feature event.
Matt Swanson and Paulie Hartwig III were on the front row for the Tour-Type Modifieds in the 37th running of the U.S. Open, with Swanson in the lead. Hartwig III would take over the top spot on lap two, with George Skora III taking over second place. Andy Jankowiak would enter the top five on lap four after passing early race leader Matt Swanson. Skora would use the inside line to take over the lead on lap eight. Jake Christman would battle with Hartwig for second place, with Christman taking over the spot on lap 20, bringing Jankowiak, Shawn Nye, and Tyler Catalano all by. Jankowiak would pressure Christman for second place at the race’s 1/3rd mark. Mike Westwood spun in turn four to bring out the caution on lap 31. Skora would take off in the lead on the restart ahead of Jankowiak. Jankowiak would take over the lead on lap 35, with Christman, Tyler Catalano, and Nye racing in the top five. Christman would race by Skora to take over second on lap 45, and brought Tyler Catalano, and Nye with him as they all passed Skora. Andy Lewis Jr and Tim Nies spun in turn two to bring out the caution on lap 50, erasing a 1.78 second advantage that Jankowiak had on the field. On the restart, Jankowiak would continue to show the way ahead of Christman, Catalano, Jake Lutz, and Nye. Just as Jankowiak pushed his lead to over a second on the field, Lewis Jr and Jayden Harman spun in turn three to bring out the caution. Catalano would take over second from Christman on lap 67 but would lose it three laps later as Jake Lutz would move into second place. The caution would come out on lap 71 as Andy Lewis Jr hit the turn four Thermal Foam. Jankowiak would hold off Jake Lutz and Shawn Nye to win his second Modified US Open title, and 10th overall win at the Open, breaking the tie, he had with Chuck Hossfeld for most all-time.
David Brunka and Tucker Welshans shared the front row for the Street Stock main event, with Brunka taking the early lead ahead of Welshans and Tim Garlock. Garlock would clear Brunka for the lead on lap three, with Tommy Wentland challenging Welshans for second place. While racing for positions inside the top five, Mark Hoch and Tommy Wentland spun in turn three to bring out the caution on lap six. The restart would see Tim Garlock and Dustin Nova on the front row, as Nathan Bryant raced in third place. Nova would take over the lead on lap nine. The caution would come out as Garlock and Rich Sharpe got together in turn four. Sharpe was able to continue racing, as Garlock pulled into the infield. Novoa and Bryant would battle for the lead on the restart, with the duo exchanging the lead several times. Novoa would clear into the lead on lap 13, with Donnie Aquino, Alex Bialkowski, and Hoch racing his way back into the top five. The caution would come out on lap 21 as Troyer Catalano spun on the back straightaway. On the restart, Nova would reclaim the lead ahead of Bryant and Mark Hoch. Bryant got loose entering turn two with five laps remaining to bring out the caution. The restart would see Nova and Hoch on the front row, and the two would battle for the duration, with Nova holding off Hoch to score the win.
Jeremy Haudricourt and Jake Lutz were on the front row for the Late Model feature with Haudricourt in the lead ahead of Lutz and Jacob Gustafson, with Scott Wylie and Bob Weber racing in the top five. Gustafson would take over second place on lap four, with Scott Wylie moving into third place. Eldon King III would take over fourth place on lap seven and would start to reel in the lead trio of Haudricourt, Gustafson, and Wylie. Wylie would take over second place on lap 11 and would quickly catch race leader Haudricourt. King would take over third place on lap 18, just as Wylie continued to pressure Haudricourt. Wylie would take over the lead on lap 20. Wylie would go on to score the win, his first Late Model victory at the US Open.
Eric Black and Kyle Casper brought the Rusty Diamond Cores Pro 4s to the green flag for their main event, with Black taking the early race lead ahead of Casper and Patsy Catalano. Russ Bulger Jr would pass Catalano for third and then would battle with Casper and Black for the lead. Casper would take over the lead on lap four, as Russ Bulger Jr would take over the top spot just one lap later. Mike Meyers would take over second place near the halfway mark. Following a lap 12 restart, Mike Meyers would take over the lead from Bulger
