In addition to the Northwest Wingless Tour being on tap, the Cottage Grove Speedway would host four other classes on Springfield Chamber of Commerce/Pepsi Family Night. The IMCA Modifieds, W.R.S. Late Model Lites, Street Stocks, and Hornets were all on the card for the Saturday July 12th event.

Eighteen IMCA Modifieds were on hand including a very stacked field of competition. In just his second race of his career Cottage Grove’s Kinzer Cox got to the front in his Howell Logging/Geo Synthetics/Razor’s Edge Graphics/Jerry Dills Trucking #1K Loose Gruff. A caution would occur after the opening lap resulting in the field bunching up. On the ensuing restart the Ester Lee Motel/Dr. May Harada Breast Cancer Specialist at Samaritan Health Services/Debra Herndon Family Nurse Practitioner/Mid-Valley Farms #25 Rocket by Ruhlman of Craig Cassell would get around Cox on lap two.

Cassell, of Albany, was in his first race back after a nasty crash on the last laps of the CGS Modified Nationals a few weeks prior. Several cautions would occur in the next handful of laps but Cassell would remain out in front. On a lap six restart Braedon Hand would navigate his way past Cassell for the lead. The Cottage Grove native, Hand, would keep his Todd’s Auto Body/D&D Automotive/KNND 1400 AM/Vintage Inn Family Restaurant #5 Shaw by S.D.M.F. entry in first place for the rest of the way to win his fourth victory of the season.

The Virgil Hanson Automotive Machine/BSB Manufacturing/James Gang Pizza/C.T. Warner #33C Shaw of Albany’s Craig Hanson was second while Craig Cassell was third. The rest of the top five would be made up of Steven Sturdevant from Springfield in his Springfield Tire Factory/Tan Republic #11 X-Factor in fourth and Kevin Williamson out of Coburg was fifth in the Kelly Williamson owned Royalty Homes/Furniture Options/X-Factor Race Cars #W6 Loose Gruff.

The W.R.S. Late Model Lites were at the Cottage Grove Speedway for their first and only appearance of 2014. Seven total cars would sign in on the registration sheets and would produce a thriller of a main event.

Grabbing the lead on the opening lap, and starting in fifth place, was Ron Brewster of Redmond in his Central Oregon Truck Company/Stipe Engine Specialties #31B Rayburn. Brewster would beautifully work his car on the bottom of the race track constructing a massive lead and would easily win the caution free main event and only first and second place finished on the lead lap.

Bob Westcott from Milwaukie was second in the Royal Purple/Pro-Tek Automotive/Northwest College Of Beauty/T.P.R. Industrial #93 Fab-Tek Termination while behind him in third was Medford driver Nolan Fincher in his Brian Luzny at Keller Williams Real Estate/Morgan Stanley Financial/Dick’s Towing #10 Klemcheck. Portland’s Randy Hansen would place in fourth in the Jason Wesolowski owned Fab-Tek/T.P.R. Industrial #3 Harter and in fifth would be Jason Wesolowski from Hillsboro in his Fab-Tek/T.P.R. Industrial #16 entry.

In the Street Stocks Justin Evan of Lebanon made his return to the historical ¼-miel clay oval. Evans, driving for car owner Al Flora and sponsored by Albie’s Medical Transport/Allied Medical Transport/Monty’s Racing Repair/X-Factor Race Cars/Wirth Wireless #99 Cougar, was very fast all night long. Evans would take the lead on lap three from the Myshkin Ferguson Racing/Brad’s Car Tunes #7M Camaro of Marena Starr-Ferguson from Eugene.

Once Evans was out in front the only thing that would slow him down would be the three cautions to occur over the course of the feature. Evans would blaze the trail for the rest of the way to win his third race of the season at CGS.

Marena Starr-Ferguson would place in second while behind her in third was the Oregon Property Services #73 Monte Carlo of Cottage Grove’s Darin Crooks. The Swan & Sons Woodworking/Smart Solutions/Les Schwab Tires of Bend #17Z Camaro of Ethan Landers from Bend in fourth and in fifth would be Darryl Crooks in his Nathan Anderson Dentistry/Platinum Hair of Creswell/Stacey Graves Massage Therapy #00 Nova.

Last but not least the Hornets would host a great main event. Josh Linville of Springfield would lead the opening lap in his Save The Ta-Ta’s Breast Cancer Awareness/O’Reilly Auto Parts/Bigg Dogg Recycling #NE1 Mitsubishi Mirage but would get passed on lap three. The driver to get around him for the top spot would be Chris Pierce of Cottage Grove.

Pierce, in his Froggy’s Towing/Meineke Car Care Center/Bigg Dogg Recycling #28 Chevy Cavalier, would keep his machine in front of the field and would keep all challengers behind him to win his third triumph of the year.

Jayson Nelson from Springfield was second in the Quality RV Repair/Springfield Automotive Service #51 Acura Integra while behind him in third would be the Burnett Builders/Quality RV Repair/Thela’s Custom Jewelry #7C Nissan 200SX of Josh Corley out of Westfir. Mike Swaim of Dexter would place in fourth in the Rapid Delivery Service/Bigg Dogg Recycling/DT Machine & Fab #48 Toyota Tacoma while his son Taunton would cross the wire in fifth in the Randy Kuhl owned Bigg Dogg Recycling/DT Machine & Fab/Big B Tire #17 Toyota Tacoma.

Saturday July 19th the Cottage Grove Speedway will host for the first time ever the Rolling Thunder Big Rigs. These are freight trucks, minus the trailers of course, that will be battling door to door lap after lap on the ¼-mile clay oval. Also on the card will be Northwest Extreme Sprints, Hornets, and Dwarf Cars.

Pit Gates will open at 2:00 PM, Front Gates open at 4:00, and Racing starts at 6:45. Ticket prices are Adults $15.00, Seniors/Military/Juniors (13-17) $13.00, Youths (Ages 12-6) $8.00, and Children under the age of 5 are FREE. For more information log on to www.cottagegrovespeedway.com.
