The Rolling Thunder Big Rigs made their first ever appearance at the Cottage Grove Speedway on Saturday July 19th. A total of nine trucks were on tap in front of a packed house at the historic ¼-mile clay oval.
The main event would be a great one with a total of seven different lead changes including the final one with a couple of laps to go. Mike Gibbons, from Rochester, Washington, would make his return to the driver’s seat after a four year hiatus. What better way to get back to racing by taking the lead late in the feature and putting his Alloy Polishing/Alamo Turbochargers/Hamilton Alternators #76 Peterbilt in victory lane.
Finishing in second would be Tacoma, Washington’s Dustin Smith in the Pacific Truck Centers/GCR Tire/Americool #17 Peterbilt followed by the Alloy Polishing/Alamo Turbochargers/Hamilton Alternators #10 International of Dave Barr out of Rochester, Washington. The rest of the top five would be made up of John Nelson from Rochester, Washington in his John Nelson Trucking/Fastenal/Buffal Signs #88 Mack in fourth and crossing the stripe in fifth was Brian Wilson, also from Rochester, Washington, in the Cascade Diesel-Moses Lake/Fastenal/GCR Tire #27 Kenworth.
