Wednesdays with Wayne – Florida Trip Comes to a Close!
March 4, 2015 – The Florida trip ended for the Wayne Johnson Racing #77x team last weekend. The ASCS National Series was only able to get in one night at Bubba Raceway Park near Ocala. Next up for Wayne will be ASCS-Red River region action in Oklahoma on March 13 at Flint Creek Speedway in West Siloam Springs and on March 14 at Creed County Speedway in Sapulpa.
Friday’s event in Ocala saw Wayne with a bad heat draw. “For the second time in three races, we drew a 71,” he says. “That put us in the back of the heat again. We were able to get up to fifth, which we felt pretty good about, but it wasn’t enough to make the show.”
The Knoxville, Iowa driver was able to qualify through the B main. “We ended up starting on the pole of the B,” says Wayne. “I was able to lead most of the way. I was running the top, and it started taking rubber on the bottom. Travis (Rilat) got by me and we ran second. I was trying to save the tires a little bit. I didn’t want to have to put new ones on for the feature, but I had to anyway.”
Wayne would line up outside row ten for the main event. “When they threw the green, I was going to be a hero and run outside of all of them!” he says. “I passed six or seven cars, about spun out up in the (marbles), and came out running last. I think 26 cars started the feature and I was dead last!”
He would get back to finish 19th. “We were able to come back up through there and get by some guys,” says Wayne. “It was tough to pass on that night. It can be tough to pass there anyway. The track is a little narrow. I don’t know how we did so well there a few weeks ago with the All Stars (16th to 6th).”
It will be a welcome week for Wayne at home before heading to Oklahoma. “We may go to Oklahoma and run with the ASCS-Red River Region (next week),” he says. “I have some things to take care of down there in Oklahoma and that will be on the way to Devil’s Bowl on March 20 and 21.”
