ix Winners At Cherry Raceway On 2012 Mid-Season Championships Night In The “Great White North”
Fife Lake, Michigan (Friday, July 6th, 2012): The three races in eight days marathon at Cherry Raceway in Fife Lake, Michigan, which was part of the Best Fourth In The North 2012 Festival Presented by the Fife Lake Chamber of Commerce concluded on Friday, July 6th with 2012 Mid-Season Championships for all six weekly classes on a very hot and sweltering evening in Northern Michigan. The high-powered UMP Super Late Models returned after a mini vacation and despite the heat, the overflow crowd was brimming with excitement and were treated to an action packed night of racing.
The First main event was the four cylinder compacts for their 15 lap feature event which was led to green by the top two in the point standings Autumn Beeman and Chris Casey. Beeman was able to jump out to the advantage, and never looked back as the 13 year old was able to pick up the feature win which was the third victory of 2012 for the Beeman’s Towing, Northern Restoration Ford Pinto. Casey finished second, Cara Neverath was third. Ryan Andras, and Dylan Rousch rounded out the top five. Beeman also won the heat.
Up next it was the UMP Modifieds for their 20 lap feature event. It would be John McCaul and Joe Rokos leading the field to the green flag. McCaul took the lead and with only one caution during the race, he was able to take the Stuberg Construction, Sweet Graphix, Xtreme Racecars Chassis to victory lane. It was the Montague, Michigan native’s fifth feature win of the season. Dennis Taghon would finish in the runner up spot. Followed by defending track champion Rokos who finished third, Paul Johnson, and Colin Thirlby completed the top five finishers. Thirlby won the heat race.
The Four Cylinder Warriors made their appearance for a 15 lap feature event, with a front row consisting of Jim Durga and Nick Olds. Durga had the early race advantage until lap 3. Where it was Olds taking the race lead and never relinquishing it as the Empire, Michigan fifteen year old would get his second feature win of the season.Over, John Edingfield who finished second, Russ Carrier finished third. Ron Doberstein Sr., and Greg Walkowiak would make up the top five. Andrew Austin was the heat race winner.
The Street Stock feature rolled out for the feature next. Their front row was made up of Allen Oyer and Bob Green who were the first to see the green flag for their 15 lap feature. Green managed to take the advantage right off the bat, and despite seeing a big challenge from Tim Tabaczka. The Fife Lake, Michigan native would take his Olson’s Auto Body, Green Racing Chevrolet Monte Carlo to victory lane. Tabaczka finished runner up next to James Clem, Oyer, and Andy Nickerson III who made up the top five finishing spots. The heat races were won by Oyer and Tabaczka
Next it was the Crusier bomber 15 lap feature. Which was lead out by Jimmy Hiller and Roger McQueen. Hiller was the race leader early, until lap 5 where it was McQueen taking the race lead. Despite several cautions in the race. The Mancelona, Michigan native would take his Richard’s Rusty Wrench, Merritt Mafia Graphics machine to victory lane for his first win of the year. As it would be Kevin Stricker who wound up second. Jeremiah Woebbeking was third, Hiller was fourth, and Richard Cebula Jr. completed the top five. Hiller, and McQueen won the heats.
Finally it was the 20 lap feature for the premiere division at Cherry Raceway the UMP Super Late Models. Their main event was lead out by the top two drivers in the points in their division, Brandon Thirlby, and Greg Gokey. Thirlby would take the early race lead, and only seeing one caution in between the Traverse City, Michigan native and his Thirlby Automotive, Homestead Motorsports Mastersbilt racecars chassis would get the win over Gokey who came across the line in second. Eric Spangler was third. Ben Hidy, and Steve Nieuwenhuis were the top five. Spangler, and Brooke Brasington were the heat race victors.
