Saturday August 8th marked the annual Historical Night at Cottage Grove Speedway. Congratulations go out to the 2015 Class of the CGS Hall of Fame and also a special thanks to Dot's Trophy Shop for providing the plaques for the inductees. Divisions that were racing included the 360 Sprints, IMCA Modifieds, Late Models, Street Stocks, and Quality RV Repair Hornets.

In the 360 Sprint feature Patrick Dills set the pace in the opening laps. The Cottage Grove native, piloting his Jacob Daniels Attorney at Law/Oregon State Representative Cedric Ross Hayden/M.D. Yearous Logging #5D KPC, would hold the coveted position until lap eleven. Taking over the lead would be the Moxie Vinyl Graphics/Grant Springer Racing Engines #10 XXX of Kyle Miller from Eugene.

Miller would set a rapid pace but once he got into some lapped traffic he would briefly be challenged by Enumclaw, Washington's Henry Van Dam. Van Dam, in his Kovash Logging/Johansen Excavating/Big Al Kids & Motorsports Foundation/Factory Kahne Shocks #33V A.R.T., but Van Dam would unfortunately pull off the track on under caution on lap twenty-three. Miller had the luxury of several lapped cars in between himself and second place. Miller would cruise the remainder of the distance to earn an emotional victory in honor of his longtime motor builder Grant Springer who passed away a few weeks ago.

Rob Lindsey from Sherwood was an impressive second in his Maxline Custom Cases/Summerfield Golf & Country Club/Speedmart Inc./Triple X Race Co. #23 XXX followed by the DES Inc./LaChance Kofoid Enterprises/Red Line Oil/Dr. Ramos Dentistry #11K Maxim, of Penngrove, California's Michael Kofoid, in third. The Napa Auto Parts/Lucas Oil Products/Awesome Race Wear/Rodgers Racing Engines #5N KPC of Seth Nunes, from Medford, was fourth followed by Patrick Dills in fifth.

Springfield's Jake Mayden would show a lot of speed in the IMCA Modified main as he looked to win two races in a row. Mayden, chauffeuring his Embers Bar & Grill/Chuck Bracelin Trucking/T.L. Morgan Motors #5M Dirt Works, would lose the lead on lap thirteen shortly after a restart. Mark Wauge, from Jacksonville, would be the driver to take over the position. Wauge, who started thirteenth and driving the Dog House Racing/Payroll Specialties Inc./Hoppes Construction/ABC Powdercoating #1M entry, would pull away to win his first race of the year at CGS.

Collen Winebarger of Corbett would get second in his Discount Race Car Parts/FinishLine Graphics/Sweere Trucking #S Shaw by Taylor and behind him in third was Medford's Monte Bischoff in the Payroll Specialties/Hoppes Construction/Lucas Oil Products #F1 High Side by Strickler. The Robert Howell Logging/Hard Knocks Brewing/Salisbury Farms/Scoggins Creek Coffee #1K Loose Gruff of Cottage Grove teenager Kinzer Cox was fourth followed by fellow Cottage Grove racer Curtis Towns, in fifth, in his Superior Fuel Cells/IBEW Local 280/Valley Rose Construction/West End Performance #24 X-Factor.

The Late Model main event would see early dominance by Collen Winebarger. The Discount Race Car Parts/FinishLine Graphics/Sweere Trucking #S MasterSbilt, of Winebarger, would lead until after a lap thirteen restart. On the fourteenth circuit Curtis Towns would emerge as the new leader. Towns stayed in the spot the rest of the way to win his seventh race of the season for car owner Paul Culp and the Superior Fuel Cells/All Pro Steel/Rapid Delivery Service/Superior Silk Screen & Embroidery #42 X-Factor team.

Collen Winebarger was the runner-up followed by Eugene's Randy Martin in his Seth Anderson Racing Engines/Team S.D.M.F. #88 Warrior in third. Completing the top five was Coos Bay teenager Preston Luckman in fourth, driving the L-N-L Lumber Outlet/Quadel Industries/Q2I Archery/Monty's Racing Repair #16P Rocket, while the O&O Farms/Kartco Racing #5 MasterSbilt of Britton Donahoo, from Salem, got fifth.

The Street Stocks would have an extremely entertaining race. Chris Sine of Eugene was the early trailblazer in his Murphy Plywood/Pro Auto Racing/Quantum Mechanics/Pure Romance by April #24 Camaro. Sine would be put under a bit of pressure and eventually passed on lap eight by Jasper's Andrew Langan. Langan, chauffeuring the D&L Truck Parts/Sierra Gear & Axle/West Coast Differentials #74 Nova, would briefly hold the coveted position until after a lap twelve restart that got Sine back in the lead.

Chris Sine was not out of the woods just quite yet. The Emerald Valley Reclaimed Timbers #3 Monte Carlo, of Jeff Casto from Cottage Grove, and Andrew Langan would both put some heat on Sine. But Sine would keep all challengers in check to win his seventh victory of the campaign.

Andrew Langan was second and Jeff Casto would come home in third. Evan Britton of Cottage Grove was fourth in his D&L Truck Parts/Robert Howell Logging/Todd's Auto Body/Clark Printing #85 Nova and completing the finishing order was the Crooks Racing #00 Nova of Darryl Crooks in fifth.

Finally in the Quality RV Repair Hornets Joe Maricle of Veneta would put together a dominating performance. Maricle, in his Royal Refuse Service/More Of Everything Racing Collectibles #11 Toyota Celica, got to the front and stayed there. The only thing slowing him down was the several cautions over the course of the main event. Maricle would capture his fifth win in 2015.

Josh Corley of Westfir would place his Burnett Builders/All Around Landscaping #7C Nissan 200SX in second and behind him in third was the Dan's Automotive #9 Dodge Neon of Dale Jenkinson from Marcola. Brandon Letsom, also of Marcola, was fourth in his Letsom Racing #23 Toyota Echo while Jasper's Eric Ashley got fifth in the Justin Austin owned Rapid Delivery Service/Bigg Dogg Recycling/DT Machine & Fab/A-1 Auto Supply #22A Toyota Tacoma.

The Cottage Grove Speedway will be dormant during the weekend of August 15th due to the Western Oregon Exposition. CGS is back in action on Saturday August 22nd for the Logger's Cup. This is a race that was a regular occurrence in the 1980's and 90's and will pay $1,500.00 to win for the Late Models. Also racing will be the Northwest Wingless Tour, IMCA Sport Mods, Street Stocks, and Northwest Focus Midget Series. For more information log on to www.cottagegrovespeedway.com.
