Brad Loyet – First Win Outside the US Comes at Ohsweken!

(Bill W) September 22, 2015 – Brad Loyet and the Vacuworx Global #o5 team recorded their first victory outside the United States last weekend, when they captured a prelim for the Canadian Nationals at Ohsweken Speedway in Ontario. This weekend, the Sunset Hills, Missouri driver has a trio of events planned. Friday and Saturday will mark the Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial at Lucas Oil Speedway near Wheatland, Missouri. On Sunday, the team will head to Quincy Raceways in Illinois with the MOWA series.

Friday’s prelim saw Brad drive from fifth to second in his heat. “We were really good the first night,” he says. “The track was pretty fast all night. Early on, you could roll through the middle and that’s how I moved up in the heat race.”

The team would be scheduled to start sixth in the Dave MacLeod Memorial. “We got jumbled up at the start a little bit,” says Brad. “The guys out front had their distance on us. Third was about all we could do.”

Starting on the pole, Brad would lead the 15-lap distance in his feature, securing a spot in Saturday’s Canadian Nationals field. “We just took off,” he says. “We were really good. We worked our way to the top the first five laps. We stepped it up up there. We were able to go green to checker, and win our first race outside of America. We set a new (15 lap) record by about nine seconds, so we were definitely trucking. That guaranteed us a spot in the finals on Saturday.”

He would qualify seventh quick in his group for Saturday’s finale. “The format we ran last time (2013) up there has been changed,” says Brad. “It ended up hurting us a little bit. You qualify in flights, and our flight had about all the favorites for the race…(eventual winner) Bryan Howland, Steve Poirier, Sam Hafertepe, Parker Price-Miller, Randy Hannagan and Glenn Styres were all in it.”

Brad would start third in his heat race. “They are really big on their starts, starting side by side, and not until the line,” he says. “I was starting third, and the guy who started fifth jumped. The only way they call a start back is if the jump comes from the front row. Otherwise, they penalize drivers after the race. That killed me, because it put me in the middle of a traffic jam in one and two, and I was back to sixth by turn two. They were only taking three. We hustled back to third, but it was a situation where I think without the jump we could have won the heat and got into the Dash.”

His third place finish would put him outside row nine for the feature. He would charge up to 12th. “We were good in the feature, but not good enough,” says Brad. “We ran a ‘H’ left rear like a 410 deal. I think that hurt us. It took a while for the tire to heat up. Halfway through the race, we really took off and started passing. By that point, it didn’t really matter, because the leaders were stretched out enough. It was what it was. I should have tightened the car a little more. Overall, it was a pretty good run for us and it’s always fun to go somewhere different like that and run.”
