Bloomington and Haubstadt Host Amsoil Sprints April 15-16; Darland Gets #58 at the Burg

The USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship returns to action with two consecutive nights of action Friday, April 15 at Bloomington (Ind.) Speedway and Saturday, April 16 at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind.

The USAC National Sprints mark their 31st appearance at Bloomington and Bryan Clauson, who leads all drivers with four USAC Sprint victories at the track, grabbed the most recent victory in April of 2015.

Meanwhile, Tri-State Speedway will welcome the USAC National Sprints for the 33rd time for the “Spring Showdown” co-sanctioned by the Midwest Sprint Car Series. Daron Clayton has scored five USAC victories at the southern Indiana bullring, more than any other driver.

Dave Darland of Lincoln, Ind. will try to improve on his 10th-place 2015 Bloomington finish. He won Saturday night’s Midwest opener at the Lawrenceburg (Ind.) Speedway, recording the 58th win of his illustrious USAC Sprint Car career.

Darland, who extended his all-time streak of consecutive seasons with at least one USAC National feature victory to 24, led the final six laps at Lawrenceburg after Robert Ballou suffered tire woes after leading most of the race. C.J. Leary took second ahead of Scotty Weir, Chase Stockon and Max McGhee.

Darland’s victory in the Jeff Walker/Curb-Agajanian Jam-It-In Storage/Hoosier Tire Maxim/Claxton gave car owner Mike Curb his 125th USAC National race victory as well, as he closes in on the record 136 wins posted by Wilke Racers and the 133 achieved by Steve Lewis.

Shawn Westerfeld led the first three laps before yielding to Ballou. Leary grabbed the ProSource fast qualifier award while Dallas Hewitt, who finished sixth, claimed the KSE “Hard Charger” award.
