Land of Oz A Nightmare for Carney
EL PASO, Texas (July 20, 2016) Coming off a strong run with the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Red River Region the weekend before, this past weekend turned 180 degrees on John Carney II who, as he put it, had the worst weekend of racing he’s had a several years.
With plans to run the Hutchinson Grand Nationals with NCRA in the Lubbock Wrecker Service No. 11x, John’s Friday night run started off less than desirable as a Power Steering line issue sent Carney pitside early in his Heat Race.
“We got the car fixed, but that put us at the back of the main. I can’t really say I passed cars before the rubber because it was rubber down all night, but we still came out with a 10th place finish.”
With the finish putting Carney deep in Saturday’s B-Feature, the team opted to run URSS instead on Saturday and Sunday in the Steward Builders No. 224. Things were looking up as Carney flew to victory in the URSS Wheatshocker Nationals at the Rolling Plains Motor Speedway in Hays, Kan. However, the win was stripped from Carney after officials deemed the engine illegal.
“According to our build sheet from the engine builder, and the tech inspector who sealed it, the engine was legal, but during their postrace tech, they came up with something different. After that, they decided to check the engine the next day cold, and then came up with something totally different. If I have an issue with the engine, I have no problem correcting it, but the issue I have with all of this is they would go past zero lash when they were checking the lift and came up two different lift measurements on the same cylinder. There was no consistency. The two tech inspectors had a discrepancy on how to even come up with zero lash, and it cost me and my team,” explained Carney of the situation.
Putting things behind him, Carney returned Sunday. Winning the B-Feature, things just didn't pan out as John's night ended with a 16th place finish and a DNF as the back of the Camshaft snapped.
Looking to the coming weekend, Carney is waiting on phone calls to see where his driver’s seat will land.
