South Bend Bull Ring Welcomes NSTA Top Speed Modifieds

CARMEL, Ind. – After Mother Nature postponed the originally scheduled third event on the 2017 Kickin’ Asphalt Tour, the travelling stars of the NSTA Top Speed Modified Tour will head back to the Hoosier State for the running of the Silver Hawk 60 at South Bend Motor Speedway.

The ¼ mile oval will see the drivers get up close and personal as they try to bump and bang their way to the front of the field. The track does not run modifieds on a weekly basis. The NSTA Modified Tour has never been to the Speedway, which makes this race wide open as to who is the favorite to win. And if that isn’t enough, the race also marks the last chance for a driver to automatically lock in to the upcoming Thunder Valley 50 at Bristol Motor Speedway on May 20.

The biggest name on the entry list is one of the most dominant drivers in modified racing over the last several years, Brian Nester. One of the namesakes of the Burkett-Nester chassis dynasty, and a former Series Champion, Nester will have all eyes on him to be the star of the field. But will his first start of the season see him shake off the winter rust? Or will the competition rise to meet the challenge?

Of the drivers entered, one name that sticks out is John Long of Niles, Michigan. Long was fast at Lucas Oil Raceway to open the season, but ended the day with a disappointing finish. Living just 20 minutes from the track, he will have home field advantage at South Bend. Long will be one of the many threats to win.

Mark Timmerman is another driver to keep an eye on. After leading laps, and putting in an impressive podium performance last month at Anderson Speedway, the Buckeye State driver is poised to make the leap to put his car in victory lane in 2017, and punch his ticket to Bristol.

It will be an action packed night of racing in South Bend, as the NSTA Top Speed Modifieds will headline alongside the Outlaw Late Models, Sportsman, Street Stocks, Hornets, and Front Wheel Drives. Racing begins at 6pm. Adults are $12, kids 6-15 are $5, and 5 and under are free.
