Brady Bacon – Two Podium Weekend at Indiana Sprintweek!

(Bill W) July 11, 2017 – Brady Bacon and the Dooling/Hayward Racing #63 team had a solid weekend with a second, third and fifth place finish as Indiana Sprintweek got underway for the USAC National Sprint Cars. The Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver will switch gears tonight as he heads to Ohio, and the Brad Doty Classic at Attica Raceway Park. Thursday through Saturday with the World of Outlaws at Eldora Speedway near Rossburg will culminate with the $50,000 King’s Royal finale Saturday night.

Indiana Sprintweek started with a postponement of Gas City I-69 Speedway from Friday to Monday. Saturday meant round one would be at Kokomo Speedway. “We were little tight in qualifying,” say Brady. “The track was a little weird with the rain they had. It throws you for a loop when you have the regular setup going in at Kokomo. So we ended up tenth quick.”

Brady started fourth in his heat. “It was narrow in the heats, and someone fell out of the inside row,” he says. “That put some fast guys forward a row, and we ended up finishing fifth. They got the jump on us and we missed the transfer by one. We made it out of the B and started the feature 11th.”

He would move towards the front right away. “We were really good,” says Brady. “There just weren’t any yellows. We were able to make it up to third. We were able to move around and run all over the track. We felt really good about that. We just didn’t put ourselves in position to start up front.”

Sunday, Brady timed in fifth quick at Lawrenceburg Speedway. “We qualified pretty well, and we were able to make it through the heat (finishing fourth),” he says. “We started second in the feature, and we were able to lead early. CJ (Leary) passed us and he was just in a league of his own that night.”

Although the car was good, second would be the destiny on Sunday. “We just weren’t going to beat him,” says Brady. “We were a little snug, and he could run the top better than us. He would just inch away from us. I tried moving around from the bottom to the top, but we couldn’t gain any ground on him. We had to settle for second, but it was good to get another solid finish.”

The series moved back north to Gas City’s makeup Monday. “They had to rush things through because there was weather moving around,” says Brady. “We went out a little later in qualifying than we wanted, and it slicked off more than we had thought. We ended up eleventh quick.”

For the second time, the heat didn’t go as planned for Brady. “My line (outside row two) got a little messed up,” he says. “The pole-sitter slid up and stacked the outside rows behind him. We got pushed out of a transfer spot. We went from fourth to first in the first lap in the B though. We had a really good car.”

The start of the main event was rough, but Brady would put on the charge of the weekend.
“We hopped a wheel in the first corner, and fell back to 18th or 19th,” he says. “We had to work our way back forward. I think with ten to go, we were still back in 13th. When it got really slick, we were passing cars quickly. We were able to get up to fifth and be in the pack of leaders. We just need to work on not being so tight at the beginning of the night, and we’ll be fine. It’s still a relatively new combination of stuff.”

Brady will be in the Bacon/Marshall Motorsports #99 for this week’s events with the World of Outlaws.
