Terrill Inches Closer To Second Championship at Tri-City Motor Speedway
07/28/2017 (Auburn, MI) Autograph night is always a special time at Tri-City Motor Speedway with all the drivers and their cars parked on the front stretch to hand out candy, hero cards, and other goodies to the children and fans. With over 100 cars on hand and only two point races left in the 2017 season, it was crunch time for our drivers to have strong performances in order to keep their championship hopes alive.
Number 7 Dakota Vennix is well on his way to a 2017 championship in the Walker’s Ideal Trophies Mini Wedge Division. However, it would be Shepherd driver, #15 Cole Doty that would sweep both the heat and feature races on this night. He would finish ahead of #07 Rylee Knoll, Vennix, #36 Jeniffer Young, and #80 Preston Mieske.
Number 24 Alex Hupert came into Friday night’s show with a slim point lead over defending track champion #4t Andrew Terrill, #3 Kyle Roberts, and #21s Steve Hilliker. #16s Mike Staszak led the opening five laps before Hilliker tracked him down and made the pass for the lead in turn two on a restart. Hilliker opened up a straightaway advantage before another caution tightened the field. This put Roberts, Terrill, and hard charging #51 Chad Finley. Terrill would pass Hilliker at the halfway point of the 30-lap feature. With ten laps remaining, Hupert would begin having electrical issues that would send him to the pits. With three to go, Roberts would also retire from the event. This left Terrill and Hilliker to duke it out for the win. It would be Terrill that would prevail at the finish with Hilliker, #11 Ryan Lanphierd, #9 Isaac Wolfgang, and #21k Ken O’Conner completing the top five. #04 Wade Witherspoon and Wolfgang would capture heat race victories.
Twenty-Four Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA Modified drivers were on hand to compete on Friday night vying for the twenty positions to start the 20-lap main event. The last chance qualifying race was won by #75 Roy Harvey, with qualifying heat races going to #33 Todd Matheson, #27 Matt Szecsodi, and #4s Toby Steele. Matheson would take advantage of the front row starting position in the feature to lead early and had a great battle with rookie #97 Nick Stormzand. Stormzand would swap the lead with Matheson a number of times before he would clear Matheson and pull away. However, a late race restart would once again bunch the field and allow #7d Myron DeYoung the opportunity to challenge for the top spot. DeYoung would snatch the lead away from the Rockford, MI driver and cruise to his second feature win of the season. Stormzand would collect another second place finish and was followed to the stripe by #19jr Kody Johnson, #42 Craig Vance, and #615 Chad Wernette.
Number 75 Kenny Keller, #50 Chad Bennett, and #J3 Tim Murphy would enjoy heat race wins on the Elgin Pro Stock division and allow themselves to have starting spots near the front of the 20 lap main event. Pole sitter #88x Eric Lake, also competing in the street stock division, would take full advantage of that start and took the lead on lap one. Lake would lead all twenty laps in claiming his first pro stock feature of 2017. Last week’s winner #27 Rob Westergard, Murphy, #28 Jared Rizer, and #K11 Kendall Morrison would complete the top five.
Eric Lake had an opportunity to pick up a second feature win of the night by competing in the Suspension MAXX street stock pinnacle event. In order to do so, he would have to come from the 12th position. Pole sitter #80 Aaron Mieske would lead the first two laps before heat race winner #50 Jake Thompson would motor his way to the point. Once Thompson got to the front, he was untouchable as he would easily be the victor of the event. #M65 Rick Spencer, Lake, #17k Andy Kaake, and #21e Dan “Evil” Engel were the remainder of the top five. #152 Robert Cunningham took the checkered flag in the last chance qualifying race while #115 Larry Hawley and Spencer won the other two heat races.
With the regular season winding down, the points championship in the Thornton Brothers Sewer and Septic Service Bomber Stock division is #18 Nick Putman’s to lose. He backed up his season long dominance by sweeping both the heat race and the feature event. He battled #03 Josh Charbonneau until the halfway point of the fifteen lap feature. Once Putman took the lead he pulled away from the field. He would grab another checkered flag cemented his likelihood of the 2017 championship. He was followed by Charbonneau, #7 John Staszak, #88 Mike Schnettler, and #66 Bryan Dinsmore.
TCMS will be taking next Friday off for teams and staff to enjoy the weekend with their families and gear up for Season Championship night on August 11th.
