Brady Bacon – Big Wins in Arizona and Bakersfield!

(Bill W) November 21, 2017 – The western part of the country has been good the Brady Bacon the last couple of weeks. At Arizona Speedway near Queen Creek, he pulled off a win with the USAC Southwest series aboard the Dooling/Hayward Racing #63. He was also second in USAC National competition that weekend after coming back from a flip early in the race. After a bit of a disappointing Oval Nationals in Perris, California, the Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver hopped in the Frank Manafort Racing #76M midget and picked up the USAC National victory at the “November Classic” at Bakersfield Speedway. This Thursday, Brady will be performing double duty on “Turkey Night” at Ventura Raceway with the midget and 360 sprint car.

Brady was able to drive both a 360 and 410 during the Western World at Arizona Speedway, November 3 and 4. The first night in the 360 with the USAC Southwest Series went great. “We were able to get a 360 motor from Gene Franckowiak from Pennsylvania,” says Brady. “It ran really well. We were fast out of the box. We were fast in practice. We were able to win our heat on Friday night and then start close to the front of the feature. We fell back at the beginning, but once the track slicked off, we took off.”

After timing in second quick and winning from sixth in his heat during USAC National sprint car action Friday, he lined up fifth for the main event. “We flipped in the feature,” says Brady. “We were running sixth or seventh and flipped. We tore part of the billboards down. It didn’t tear us up that bad. We changed the left rear radius rod and went back out. We putted the bottom, and every restart we gained a little. The track got slower and slower and I stayed down there. Eventually, we wound up taking the lead. It was wild. We had a five second lead at one point, before a yellow came out. By then, there was some rubber forming up top and Thomas Meseraull got by us. We definitely exceeded our expectations after flipping!”

After the miraculous finish Friday night, Brady would finish 13th in Saturday’s 410 finale, and second in the 360. The following weekend saw the three-night Oval Nationals at Perris Auto Speedway in California. Though he would start all the features, the team chased problems all weekend. “We had an issue with the car there,” he says. There was an issue with the chassis, and the paperclip shape of the track enhanced that. We didn’t really have a way to fix that. It took us all weekend to find it, and we were scratching our heads. I think we finally found something with the Jacob’s ladder. It was a binding issue. We had that problem at some other places, and hopefully, we’ve solved it for the future.”

Last Saturday night saw the winning night at Bakersfield start well. “We qualified pretty well (fourth quick),” says Brady. “We had a little trouble passing in the heat (finishing fifth, one spot out of a transfer). It was a little narrow and greasy, but we came back and won the B.”

Brady started seventh in the feature. “The stock cars had shined the track off a little,” he says. “It was a little wet at the beginning until the midgets churned it up. I got a good start on the top early on before anyone else got up there. We got the lead pretty early and stayed out front.”

The team has been focusing on their engine program in the ultra-competitive midget class. “Frank (Manafort) and Brad (Noffsinger) have been working hard on our Speedway motors,” says Brady. “They run really well. It felt like we were at least on an even playing field with the other motors. I’ve always felt our car was as good or better than anyone else’s, and now the motor is where we need it too. We feel pretty confident going into Turkey Night.”
