ASPHALT MODIFIED RACING IN NEW YORK TO KICK OFF WITH RACE OF CHAMPIONS ASPHALT MODIFIED SERIES AT CHEMUNG SPEEDROME ON SATURDAY, MAY 8
Chemung (N.Y.) Speedrome will provide the stage for the Race of Champions Modified Series return to racing in its home state of New York. The series was “idle” in the Empire State during the 2020 season due to the Covid-19 pandemic that wreaked havoc worldwide. With life returning to normal, the series will set out to face the challenging Southern Tier oval on its traditional May date.
“We’re excited to get going,” offered Chemung promoter, Ray Hodge. “It’s been a long road to get here, but we’ve been working hard and we are ready. We are looking forward to hosting the series on May 8 and getting things going in the right direction for a great season at Chemung.”
From the driver standpoint Chemung provides several unique challenges. Defending Series champion and past race-winner at Chemung, Patrick Emerling of Orchard Park, N.Y., intends to have his engine woes behind him and be part of the field on May 8.
“Chemung is a challenging place for us,” stated Emerling. “It is so different on either end and you have to be on your game as a driver. It is a very precise race track, you have to hit your marks and take care of your equipment. Anything can happen. We are looking forward to the challenge and getting back to racing in New York, we’ve missed being able to race in our home state.”
This season, this will be the first of two visits for the Series to the challenging track. The Modifieds will return on Saturday, August 7, for the running of the Rod Spalding Classic. Gates will open at 12:00 pm (noon) with practice to follow at 1:00 pm and qualifying to begin at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 8. For more information contact Chemung Speedrome at 607.529.9998.
