DIRTcar Nationals, Huge Western Swing Kick Starts Growing 2011 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Tour
[i The Greatest Show on Dirt to invade 23 states, three Canadian provinces and make inaugural visits to speedways in California, Oklahoma and Ontario ]
ORLANDO, FL - Dec. 11, 2010 - The 40th Annual DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park and the biggest western swing in recent years kicks off the 2011 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series tour, which was revealed Friday at the Performance Racing Industry trade show in Orlando, Fla.
The schedule will continue to grow during the winter but already includes a mixture of traditional races with new events, including first-time visits to three speedways.
"This is one of the most exciting World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series schedules we have built," said series director Carlton Reimers. "Early on the teams will be challenged by a great mix of big speedways and tight bullrings as we work from Florida in February through California in March and April and then back east. I'm really looking forward to returning to some of the tracks we haven't raced at in the past few years as well as seeing some venues for the first time. It really will be a great battle all the way to Charlotte in November."
Can Jason Meyers capture a second title? Will Steve Kinser race to a record-setting 21st crown? Can Donny Schatz reclaim his championship form and win one for the thumb? Or will Joey Saldana become the ninth different champion in series history? What rising stars will step up in 2011? With events in 23 states plus three Canadian provinces, it won't be hard to find answers to these questions and more by checking out the series firsthand.
The Outlaws cross the country following the opening event in Florida with races at Pike County Speedway in Mississippi and Houston-area's Royal Purple Raceway, formerly Houston Raceway Park. They'll continue to roll westward in March to Las Vegas Motor Speedway for two nights of action before barnstorming the rest of the month and early April through California, home of defending series champion Meyers, who became the first Golden State native to win the prestigious crown last month.
Among the highlights of the western swing are returns to Giant Chevrolet Kings Speedway in Hanford for the first time since 2003 and Calistoga Speedway for the first time since 2007. The Outlaws will also invade Merced Speedway for the first time in series history.
Moving to the Midwest in April, the Outlaws will make their inaugural visit to Salina Highbanks Speedway in Oklahoma, then in June they will return to the Belleville High Banks in Kansas for the first time since 1981, when Doug Wolfgang edged Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell.
July kicks off the "Month of Money" and will be the busiest month of the season with 15 events already slated to run in five different states plus two Canadian provinces, including the series' first event at Brockville Ontario Speedway between races at Ohsweken Speedway and Autodrome Drummond.
The momentum continues building toward the championship-deciding fifth annual World of Outlaws World Finals with a traditional fall schedule highlighted by the Gold Cup Race of Champions at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif., the Morgan Hughes Memorial National Open at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa., and a Super DIRT Week event at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park in Elbridge, N.Y.
It all sets the stage for one of the biggest annual events in motorsports, the World of Outlaws World Finals in November at The Dirt Track at Charlotte, marking the only time all season the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, the World of Outlaws Late Model Series and the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds will compete on the same night at the same track.
