Marks Happy With Race Car, Dissatisfied With Performance at World Finals

Inside Line Promotions – CONCORD, N.C. (Nov. 14, 2013) – Brent Marks departed from his inaugural trip to the World Finals both happy and dissatisfied.
“As far as our car performance I think I would rate that a B,” he said. “I was really happy with the way our car performed, but I was disappointed in myself. I had such a good car and wasn’t able to capitalize on it.”
Competing at The Dirt Track at Charlotte against more than 50 drivers during the 7th annual World Finals featuring the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series, Marks kicked off the event on Thursday with a qualifying only day. He timed in 28th quickest for the Friday program and 17th quickest for the Saturday program.
“I didn’t get the right line for Friday night’s portion,” he said. “I tried to go down the middle through (turns) three and four in the ruts and it just wasn’t the fastest way. (On Saturday’s qualifying session) I hit a rut in turns one and two and almost lost the car. On my second lap I hit the line that I needed to hit and we were 17th quick.”
When the team returned to the 4/10-mile track on Friday, Marks finished where he started – sixth – in his heat race. That was two positions out of advancing to the feature and it relegated Marks to the Last Chance Showdown, which transferred the top-four finishers to the main event.
“I thought we raced pretty well Friday with the way the track was,” he said. “We had a car that was in contention with the other cars. We just had to adjust on it and get it better.”
After advancing from ninth to fifth place, Marks finished one spot out of a transfer.
“The B Main rubbered up,” he said. “Me and Tim Shaffer were equal distance apart. I just couldn’t make up any ground on him.”
The team continued to improve during Saturday’s finale, which Marks began from the pole of his heat race.
“When Saturday rolled around we had a really good race car,” he said. “We had a really good start in the heat race and on the last lap, last corner I hit one of the infield tires. That ruined our chances the rest of the night. I would have had a good starting spot in the dash. I just blew that whole deal. I never usually make mistakes like that.”
Marks, who had built a straightaway advantage, spun around in turn four and was credited with a 10th-place result in his heat race. That sent him to the Last Chance Showdown, which he started on the inside of the second row.
“We broke the frame in a couple of places and had some help from the CJB team and were able to get it fixed back up,” he said. “We scrambled around pretty good and were able to get it fixed, made it in the show and got up to 13th.”
After finishing third in the consolation race, Marks charged from 21st to 13th during the 30-lap feature.
“I was happy with the way the car was being damaged,” he said. “The track was a lot heavier than it was on Friday. I kinda had the car setup too tight. We were really fast on the bottom. I passed a lot of good race cars. I think we could have had a top-10 finish if it wasn’t for the last restart. The bottom row didn’t go and I lost about five spots on that restart. At least I know we have a fast car and we have a good notebook for when we go down there next season.”
Marks is scheduled to wrap up his season on Saturday at Susquehanna Speedway Park in Newberrytown, Pa.
