Inside Line Promotions – ROSSBURG, Ohio (May 12, 2015) – Caleb Helms had a roller-coaster night last Friday at Eldora Speedway.

Helms opened the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series event by qualifying 36th quickest around the famed half-mile oval.

“We were the last car out to qualify and I ran it like a rookie,” he said. “We went from racing around the top in hot laps to around the bottom in qualifying. I thought I needed to make it stick on the bottom and to make it stick I thought I had to lift. That was the story of it.”

That lined him up on the outside of the fourth row of a heat race. Helms maintained the eighth position until a late caution gave him an opportunity.

“I had my wing really far back,” he said. “I decided during a yellow to move it forward and that gave me a rocket. We got off the corner and down the front straightway and I was one of the last cars. I went into the first corner and drove underneath two cars and then in the next corner got another. It was like a rail. It stuck really well.”

Helms picked up three positions following the late restart to finish fifth in his heat race, which locked the team into the main event.

“I was pretty bummed about how we qualified, but I just happened to make it at the end of the heat race and that fired us up,” he said. “I felt like we were going to be pretty good in the feature.”

Unfortunately, Helms was unable to take the green flag because of a mechanical problem.

“On the warm-up lap I got to the end of the straightaway after taking a corner and it started vibrating and acting funny so I had to pull in,” he said.

Helms is scheduled to compete this Friday at either Limaland Motorsports Park in Lima, Ohio, or at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio, and on Saturday at Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, Ohio.
