Inside Line Promotions – Alger, Wash. (Sept. 7, 2015) – Trey Starks closed a three-race weekend at Skagit Speedway by nearly tying his career-best World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series result at the high-banked track.

Starks rebounded from a low qualifying result on Saturday with the premier sprint car series to post a 14th-place finish, which was only one position away from his best-ever result at Skagit Speedway.

“Given the circumstances I was happy to get the race over with and roll it into the trailer with a top 15,” he said. “It was a tricky track. It was nice to get through unscathed.”

Starks kicked off the night by timing in 20th quickest around the 3/10-mile oval. He then maneuvered from seventh to fifth place during a heat race to lock himself into the main event, which he started on the outside of the 10th row.

“We didn’t qualify like we wanted to,” he said. “We were way off with the car and didn’t put a good lap together. Then we ran ok in our heat. The track was pretty rough from all the rain. In the main we just picked our way through the field. I tried to play it safe and smart. We got a real bad vibration as one of the bleeders came out of the axle and was flopping in the wheel. I just tried to stay consistent and not get in trouble.”

Starks ended 14th to record his third top 15 in his last four World of Outlaws features.

He also competed at Skagit Speedway last Thursday, when he did double duty driving his family car in the 360ci Summer Thunder Sprint Series class and for Doug Rutz in the sportsman division.

“It just wasn’t a good night,” he said. “There were a lot of torn-up race cars. The track was extremely rough and extremely difficult. ”

Starks qualified third quickest and powered from sixth to third place in a Summer Thunder Sprint Series heat race to start the main event on the inside of the third row. Unfortunately, he was caught up in an opening-lap crash that involved approximately a dozen drivers.

“Everything went haywire,” he said. “The first five rows of cars all piled together. It started with the front row and went back. We could have got back out there, but we looked at the track and said it’d be better to load it up and not tear anything else up. It was probably the roughest track I’ve been on.”

Starks, who was credited with a 16th-place result, had similar results in the sportsman class. He timed in second quickest during qualifying and then advanced from fourth to third place in a heat race to line up third for the main event.

“We had a few initial starts,” he said. “On one of those we had the lead, but on the one that went through we dropped back to fourth. We had a little contact with a car on the exit of turn four. Then I drove into turn two on the high side and it started hopping real bad. We ended up getting upside down.”

Starks ended 18th after crashing on Lap 2.

Friday’s World of Outlaws race at Skagit Speedway was rained out.

Starks will return to competition with the Outlaws on Monday at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash. He scored a 10th-place result during the event two years ago.
