Inside Line Promotions – MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (Oct. 5, 2015) – Sammy Swindell patiently waited for the opportunity to compete with CJB Motorsports last weekend during the 53rd annual National Open.

Rain condensed the three-day World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series event into a one-day, $50,000-to-win show on Sunday at Williams Grove Speedway.

“There’s not much you can do about it,” he said. “The way it was going to be with three days it’d give us an opportunity to get more track time and maybe find a little better setup or do little tweaks. The way it was we had to wait around and run the one night.”

Swindell kicked off the night by qualifying seventh quickest in his group, which started the Big Game Treestands backed car on the pole of a heat race.

“You’d think with all the rain the track would be pretty fast and pretty heavy,” he said. “It was quite a bit slicker than it has been the last few times I’ve been there.”

The top was the preferred lane and gave an advantage to the outside row on the start of the heat races.

“I took off and cut the corner a bit and got most of my car by (Donny Schatz, who started on the outside front row) and I was going to drift to the outside,” he said. “He had a run because the line was better. I was forced to follow him or go somewhere else. Once he’s ahead you’re in the dirty air and it’s hard to follow someone into the corner. I tried to cut across and lost a car length and a half. Once you get half a lap in that’s kind of what it is, especially when you have a track that has one fast lane. However, I thought my car was better than it has been on that type of track.”

Swindell finished second in the heat race to lock into the 18th starting position for the main event.

“It’s always hard there when there’s so many cars and you’re running in a pack,” he said. “Guys are trying different lanes. If you’re right up on them you have to lift when they do. It’s hard to drive around them. You almost need to be back a way and have a run on them to pull off a pass. When you have cars around you it’s hard to get some room because there’s someone behind you wanting by. Everybody is playing defense and offense at the same time.”

Swindell battled for a top 15 throughout the main event before posting a 15th-place finish.

He will return to competition with CJB Motorsports Nov. 5-7 at The Dirt Track at Charlotte in Concord, N.C., for the Bad Boy Buggies World of Outlaws World Finals with the World of Outlaws.
