Brady Bacon – Successful Fall Nationals!

(Bill W) October 20, 2015 – Brady Bacon was one of two drivers to brave action both Friday and Saturday night at Lawrenceburg Speedway in Indiana. The Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver competed with his #99 on Friday, finishing 13th with the World of Outlaws. A fourth place run with USAC on Saturday followed aboard the Hoffman Racing #69. Brady will compete this Friday night with the POWRi midgets at the 3rd Annual Jason Leffler Memorial at Wayne County Speedway in Wayne City, Illinois.

Brady came out late in qualifying Friday night with the World of Outlaws and registered the 20th quick time of the night in the 36-car field. “We changed some things,” he says. “I wanted to try some things here at the end of the year. The changes made a big difference…actually I wasn’t ready for that big a change. Our package was a little bit behind in qualifying. It took us awhile to catch up with it, but we were pretty good by the end of the night.”

Needing to make the top five in the heat, he would do just that, driving from fifth to third. “We were really good there in the heat,” says Brady. “We were a little better than the second place car of (David) Gravel too, so that was encouraging. When you qualify behind the 8-ball, you don’t want to make any mistakes after that.”

Starting nineteenth, he would surge forward to the 13th place finish. “It was really hard to pass in the back,” says Brady. “It was really dusty. Everything disappeared when you were trying to run the top or the middle. You try to be careful and not tear anything up. When the track cleaned up, we got better and started moving up. It took a little rubber, and maintained in 13th. It was a good finish for us in a very tough field.”

Brady came out 20th in a 34-car USAC field on Saturday and timed in tenth quick. “The guys who are usually fast there expected one thing, and the track wasn’t what we expected,” he says. “There were some names that you wouldn’t expect on top, and the names you would expect weren’t necessarily there.”

Starting fourth in his heat, he would drive to a win, earning a starting spot outside of row one for the feature. “We were really good in the heat race,” says Brady. “After that, the track just didn’t have a lot left in the feature. We missed it a little bit. We just weren’t quite tight enough. We were holding on until it took a little rubber, and we held on to fourth.”

Brady struggled with the dry conditions in his fourth place run. “I knew after the first lap,” he says. “I had a good run in one and two, and then we got through three and four. I felt o.k., but someone slid me in one and I knew that I had lost time in three and four. There wasn’t much I could do down there, because there wasn’t much to lean on. It was just slick from top to bottom.”

Brady will be in a new midget ride for him Friday. “I’m driving for Frank Manafort,” he says. “Brad Noffsinger runs the team. We’ll be running together at the Chili Bowl. This is our first outing together, and it will give us a little track time before January.”
