Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (April 25, 2016) – Travis Rilat was on pace for a pair of top 15s last weekend with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series before his finale was cut short because of a mechanical problem.
“It wasn’t too bad of a weekend at all,” he said. “Unfortunately we ended on a sour note.”
Rilat opened the Texas Outlaw Nationals doubleheader at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Friday by qualifying 19th quickest. He quickly rallied from his seventh starting position in a heat race to a battle for third place before ending sixth.
“We lost some air in the right rear tire and that screwed things up so we hung on to transfer into the feature,” he said.
It was good enough to lock Rilat into the 16th starting position for the main event.
“We pretty much ran where we started for most of the race,” he said. “We’d gain a couple of positions and then lose a couple of spots. We ended the night moving forward so that’s always a positive.”
Rilat finished with a 14th-place result, which was his best World of Outlaws result at the track.
The weekend wrapped up on Saturday with Rilat qualifying 21st quickest.
“That’s about the usual for me going to a time trial show,” he said. “It’s real tough when you don’t run many shows that qualify. We need to go run several nights in a row to get better. Plus, I’m not a good qualifier anyhow. It gets better if you can run a few nights with them.”
Rilat advanced from seventh to fifth place in a heat race to start the $20,000-to-win main event on inside of the eighth row.
“We passed a couple of cars, but the motor let go a few laps into the race,” he said.
Rilat was credited with a 24th-place finish after exiting the track early.
He will take this weekend off before resuming ASCS Gulf South Region action on May 6 at Heart O’ Texas Speedway in Waco, Texas, and May 7 at Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, Texas. Rilat is ranked fifth in the championship standings – only 22 points out of the lead.
