Inside Line Promotions – MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (May 23, 2016) – Trey Starks continued his strong performance inside the Jeff McCall owned sprint car last weekend in Central Pennsylvania, where the team faced the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series and the vaunted Pennsylvania Posse.
Starks kicked off the busy week last Wednesday at Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown for the Gettysburg Clash, which he began by setting quick time during qualifying for the first time in his career during a World of Outlaws event. That lined Starks up on the pole for a heat race, in which a top-two finish would have locked him into the dash.
“We had a really good night going on Wednesday, but unfortunately it rained out,” he said. “If all went right we would have been set up looking for a good spot in the dash.”
Starks returned to the 3/8-mile oval on Thursday when the program started over from scratch. This time Starks timed in third quickest in his group, which lined him up on the outside of the front row for a heat race.
“We qualified good again,” he said. “Unfortunately we missed the bottom going into turn one on the start of the heat race and lost a spot. That put us one position out of the dash.”
Starks lined up on the outside of the fifth row for the main event.
“Toward the beginning of the race we were going really well,” he said. “I think we were racing Joey Saldana for seventh. About the halfway point, I don’t know if I stayed on the top too long or if the car started going away, we started to fade and we didn’t get the finish we wanted.”
Starks ended with a 15th-place result, which was his best World of Outlaws result this season.
He then ventured to Williams Grove Speedway on Friday for the first night of a doubleheader at the half-mile oval.
“It didn’t start out as good,” he said. “We didn’t draw as well so we knew it’d be an uphill battle. We still salvaged a decent time in qualifying and then we had some intense battles in the heat race and the Last Chance Showdown with us losing the transfer spot in the closing laps of both races, which is really, really tough. It’s a fun track, but it’s really tough and technical so you can’t make mistakes. In the heat I made a mistake where I was running on the track. In the Last Chance Showdown I got racing with a guy in front of me too hard and that let Jason Johnson get by us. I know where I made the mistakes and I know what I need to do the next time there.”
Starks, who timed in 12th quickest in his group, placed sixth in a heat race and fifth in the Last Chance Showdown.
Saturday’s event at Williams Grove Speedway rained out.
Starks is slated for another busy weekend starting this Friday at The Dirt Track at Charlotte in Concord, N.C., where he will race for McCall during the Circle K/NOS Energy Drink Outlaw Showdown with the World of Outlaws. Starks will then catch a flight back to the West Coast so he can drive his family sprint car on Saturday and Sunday at Cottage Grove Speedway in Cottage Grove, Ore., for the Marvin Smith Memorial.
“I think I have to be pretty focused this weekend with all the running around we’ll have to do,” he said. “I’m excited to get to Charlotte. With Jeff being from the Charlotte area it’d be good for us to get a good run there. Then we get to run back to one of my favorite tracks in Cottage Grove. We haven’t run there this year yet. It’s going to be an exciting weekend and a little interesting. We’ll run on one coast on Friday and then all the way to the other coast on Saturday and Sunday.”
