Inside Line Promotions – ROSSBURG, Ohio (July 18, 2017) – Dominic Scelzi is pleased with the speed his family owned, Roth Motorsports supported team showcased throughout a pair of premier World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series events in Ohio last week.
“I’m happy with our speed,” he said. “At the end of the day we did a good job.”
The action began last Tuesday at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, where Scelzi opened the Brad Doty Classic by qualifying 19th quickest in his group after going out late.
“We were one of the last cars out in our group,” he said. “Had we been the first car in the second group we would have been seventh quickest. We would have been alright.”
Scelzi rebounded from seventh to fifth place in a heat race, which narrowly missed locking into the A Main. That relegated him to the C Main, in which he advanced from fifth to third place to miss a transfer by only one position.
His best night of the week came on Thursday during the first of three straight nights of racing at Eldora Speedway during the Kings Royal.
“I put down a decent lap in qualifying and we had good speed,” he said. “Then I went sixth to fourth and almost had third in the heat race. We raced with Jason Johnson pretty good.”
Scelzi timed in 12th quickest in his group and his fourth-place result in the heat race lined him up 16th in the A Main.
“I worked my way to 12th,” he said. “Two guys in front of me banged into each other down the front straightaway. I lifted and got out of the groove and lost some spots to finish 16th. I was definitely happy with our night. It was good to get the 30 laps in, especially running around the bottom.”
The team returned to the half-mile oval on Friday. Scelzi qualified 18th quickest in his group before maneuvering from sixth to fourth place in a heat race. That missed a lock-in position by only one spot and relegated him to the C Main, in which he finished fifth.
“We went out late for qualifying, which wasn’t an advantage,” he said. “The car was good so it gave me a little confidence for when the track did slick off for the Kings Royal.”
The weekend concluded on Saturday during the Kings Royal. Scelzi timed in 37th quickest, which missed the heat race inversion by only seven positions.
“We were the second-to-last car out for qualifying,” he said. “Our time didn’t get us into the top 30 and that was so important.”
Scelzi picked up two positions in the heat race to finish fifth, which started him seventh in the B Main.
“That was the toughest B Main I’ve ever been a part of,” he said. “There were some awesome drivers in front and behind me. I fell back to ninth at one point. On a restart I was able to get the top to work in turns three and four. We made up some good time. I raced with (Dale) Blaney for five or six laps. I always learn a lot racing with the best sprint car drivers in the world.
“At the end of the day I wanted to make all the shows, but I feel like we did a lot. To miss the second biggest sprint car race there is by three spots, you can’t be too disappointed.”
Scelzi, who ended the Kings Royal with a seventh-place finish in the B Main, is scheduled to compete this Saturday at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa.
