Inside Line Promotions – MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (July 26, 2017) – Trey Starks tied his best finish of the season with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series last Friday when he placed 13th at Williams Grove Speedway during the opening night of the Summer Nationals.
It also marked his career-best result at the half-mile oval during World of Outlaws competition.
“Williams Grove is a really tough and unique track,” he said. “Being able to be consistent there is a big confidence booster. It’s a tough place to run well at. A lot of guys struggle there and that was us for a while. Lately it seems we’re starting to figure things out.”
The night began with Starks guiding the Gobrecht Motorsports team to the second quickest qualifying time in their group. Starks then won a heat race from the pole to lock into the dash. A sixth-place result in the dash lined him up on the outside of the third row for the main event.
“We were running really good toward the beginning of the night,” he said. “We ran sixth for most of the A Main, but we had a slew of cautions with about 10 laps to go. It hurt us big time. It seemed like we always restarted on the outside and got moved out of the way. That shuffled us pretty good.”
Starks held on for the 13th-place result.
He opened the finale on Saturday by qualifying fifth quickest in a group. Starks placed fourth in the heat race to lock into the 14th starting position for the main event, which was postponed until September because of a rain storm.
“I feel a lot better about our race package,” he said. “We’re looking to hopefully going forward and to be the one going by cars and not being passed.”
Next up for Starks is a trip to Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, this Saturday for the first time this season.
“I think we did all right last year,” he said. “It felt like we just got going during the Knoxville Nationals. We finally made the A Main on the Friday night show and were rolling. If we had a few more laps at the place it’d really help so this year that’s what we’re doing. We’re going out a week early and will run the Capitani Classic before the Nationals as well.”
