Inside Line Promotions – CHICO, Calif. (Sept. 11, 2017) – Dominic Scelzi is all smiles this week following his best-career weekend of racing with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series.
Scelzi and his family owned, Roth Motorsports supported team accomplished several firsts during the Gold Cup Race of Champions at Silver Dollar Speedway, where Scelzi made his return to his home state for the first time in three months.
“I credit racing in the Midwest and with the World of Outlaws to our success at home,” he said. “You don’t notice it until you get back to places you’ve been. It raises your game more than anything.”
The event began on Friday when Scelzi qualified second best in his group and third quickest overall out of the 40 drivers.
“We had an early pill draw,” he said. “The track didn’t fall off, but it was easier for me because the curb wasn’t built all the way up. We were able to click off a really good lap and had quick time for a little bit. To go second quick was awesome. It meant a lot to be able to qualify so well with such a tough field of cars.”
Scelzi then scored his first career heat race victory with the World of Outlaws to lock into the dash. A third-place result in the dash lined him up on the inside of the second row for the main event.
“The top was rough and treacherous and the bottom was slicked off and hard to hit,” he said. “It was the most technical place I’ve been between a huge curb and holes and slick through the middle, having to putt around the bottom and catch the moisture off the corners. It was really difficult. We stayed on the rear bumper of second the entire race. I had several times to try to get into second, but both times Shane (Stewart) shut it down. At the end when Shane and Kyle Hirst got racing hard I really closed in. The last three laps it could have been anyone’s race. I’m very happy with a third-place finish.”

The strong result gave the team even more momentum entering Saturday’s finale, which Scelzi began by setting quick time during qualifying for the first time in his career.
“That was really neat to get my first Outlaws quick time,” he said. “I’m not the qualifying type, but it seems like the last couple of months we’ve been doing a good job and getting better. Unfortunately, being in the first heat race there was so much grease on the bottom. We figured we’d fall back a bit on the start. I didn’t think that I started that race, but that’s how it goes. By the time we were at the white line I was in third and that’s where we finished.”
Scelzi, who started on the pole of the heat race, ended third to miss making the dash by only one position. It lined him up ninth for the A Main.
“It was really tough to pass,” he said. “The cushion was super tough to run. I got to eighth about halfway through. I moved up and was all over the guy in seventh. I got in there wrong one corner with about 10 laps to go. I hit a hole real hard and it bounced to the curb. I was sideways and around we went. We did a 360 and fell to 16th.”
Scelzi picked up a couple of positions in the closing laps to finish 14th. Here is a link to watch the main event: https://youtu.be/9Q79tZb9GVo.
He will compete this Friday and Saturday at Calistoga Speedway in Calistoga, Calif., for the Wine Country Outlaw Showdown with the World of Outlaws. His best-ever finish at the track with the Outlaws is a 16th-place result in April 2014 and he earned a feature victory during his most recent race at the oval.
