Inside Line Promotions – MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (Oct. 2, 2017) – Big Game Motorsports produced a trio of top-10 finishes last weekend during the famed National Open at Williams Grove Speedway.
“Every night we got the car better,” driver Kerry Madsen said. “I was really, really happy with the way the race car responded. I felt we made progress.”
The event began ominously last Thursday when the Muddy sponsored team had a mechanical problem during hot laps.
“We had a steering issue in hot laps,” Madsen said. “We barely made it out for qualifying. We were pretty lucky to get away with that.”
Madsen qualified sixth quickest in his group. He then placed third in a heat race to narrowly miss a spot in the dash and to line up 12th for the A Main.
“We had a good car and went forward,” he said. “It was a great run.”
The team advanced for a seventh-place result.
The second round of action was similar on Friday when Madsen timed in third quickest in his group and again placed third in a heat race to miss the dash by one position. He started 10th in the main event and ended ninth after the race was delayed by rain.
“There was some good rain and it was a one-groove track,” he said. “There wasn’t much passing. It was good to come out with a top 10.”
Madsen ranked sixth in event points out of more than 50 competitors following the two preliminary nights. He won a heat race to open Saturday’s action, which locked him into the dash. A fifth-place result in the dash started Madsen fifth for the $50,000-to-win main event.
“We had a really good race car,” he said. “I just didn’t get good restarts. On the double-file restarts I lost ground. Then it laid rubber halfway through the race. You had to get in line and that was that.”
Madsen capped the weekend with a seventh-place finish, which was his 47th top 10 of the season.
The Muddy backed team will take the next two weeks off before competing on Oct. 20 at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., for the FVP Platinum Battery Shootout and Oct. 21 at Salina Highbanks Speedway in Salina, Okla., for the Twister Showdown with the World of Outlaws.
