Swindell Makes Gains on Learning New Engine During World of Outlaws Doubleheader

Inside Line Promotions – SALINA, Okla. (Oct. 23, 2017) – Sammy Swindell used last weekend’s World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series doubleheader in the Midwest as a test session.
He and car owner A.G. Rains debuted a newly built 410ci engine on Friday at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., for the FVP Platinum Battery Shootout.
“Given that we’ve run that car hardly at all with a 410 motor in it we weren’t sure exactly what we needed to do or where we needed to be,” Swindell said. “We wanted to get some laps on the motor and see where we were at. They made the motor a lot better, but for us to find out where the sweet spot is we had to find all of that out by racing. We had to see what it liked and didn’t like and put it all together. Some of the stuff from running the 360 didn’t work.”
Swindell qualified 15th quickest before he placed fifth in a heat race, which locked him into the 19th starting position for the A Main.
“We were off on our gear for qualifying,” he said. “We didn’t really know what the motor was going to like. We found out it has a lot of top end so we didn’t have enough gear to get off the corner. We made some changes for the heat, which I thought was a bit better. However, we ran into a problem where someone on the outside got loose and sideways. We banged wheels pretty good and it broke the Jacob’s Ladder. The car wasn’t very good after that so we didn’t get a good idea of how the car was handling. It was a handful to drive in the main event.”
Swindell struggled with handling throughout the A Main as he ended with a 22nd-place finish.
The team ventured to Salina Highbanks Speedway for the Twister Showdown on Saturday.
“The changes that we made from Lakeside to Salina were really big,” he said. “We went out in the first practice and the track was really wet. When it came to qualifying the track was really locked down. We did a few things to free the car up some, but it developed a vibration.”
Swindell timed in 15th quickest in qualifying for the second straight night. However, he powered from fifth to third place in a heat race before the driveline broke prior to the midpoint of the race. With rain in the area and the race being hustled along the team was unable to get everything fixed properly before the main event so Swindell scratched.
“I know what we can do to be better at the next one,” he said. “We made big gains on the car last weekend.”
Swindell is slated to return to action this Friday and Saturday at Dodge City Raceway Park in Dodge City, Kan., for the Outlaw Boothill Showdown with the World of Outlaws.
