Inside Line Promotions – MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (May 21, 2019) – Giovanni Scelzi scored a pair of seventh-place finishes last weekend at Williams Grove Speedway.
While the results were the same, the path was anything but similar during the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series Morgan Cup featuring more than 40 drivers.
“It was two very different nights,” Scelzi said. “On Friday we qualified second quickest in our group and I won a heat race to make the dash.”
Scelzi guided the Bernie Stuebgen owned race car to a fifth-place run in the dash, which lined the team up on the inside of the third row for the main event.
“We ran fifth for a while,” he said. “I was running fifth and think I could have got fourth when I got slowed by a lapped car, which allowed Lance Dewease and Tim Shaffer by. Still a top 10 with the World of Outlaws in Central Pennsylvania is something to be proud of.”
Saturday’s top-10 outing was much more difficult to come by. Scelzi timed in 15th quickest in his group, which lined him up near the back of a heat race.
“I didn’t make the right line in qualifying so we were way behind the eight ball,” he said. “We battled for the transfer in the heat, but ended in sixth. The feature lineups go back to qualifying so we were buried.”
Scelzi won the C Main to transfer into the last row of the Last Chance Showdown. He then maneuvered from 11th to fourth in the race to capture the final transfer position into the A Main.
“We made a lot of changes throughout the night,” he said. “We’d never been on a track that slick at Williams Grove. We got better as we went. In the feature I got my own lane on the top rolling. Once I got into the top 10 I had to slide guys. With about 10 laps to go the track took rubber so that made it more difficult to make up more ground.”
Scelzi powered from 24th to a seventh-place outing, earning the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars. He ended the night with 25 positions gained during the three feature races.
“It’s tough to get going with those guys so it’s a confidence booster and shows we can move forward if we need to,” he said.
The week began on Wednesday at Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, Pa., during the Gettysburg Clash presented by Drydene. Scelzi qualified 13th quickest in his group and placed seventh in a heat race. A charge from seventh to third in the Last Chance Showdown garnered a transfer into the main event.
“We didn’t qualify very good,” he said. “I didn’t make very good laps and we didn’t have a good heat because the track was locked down. We had a good B Main to make the show though. In the feature someone spun in front of me and kept going. I dropped to the back and never got going again.”
Scelzi ended with a 25th-place finish.
He is scheduled to race this Friday and Saturday at The Dirt Track at Charlotte in Concord, N.C., during the Patriot Nationals and Monday at Lawrenceburg Speedway in Lawrenceburg, Ind., during the Memorial Day Spectacle presented by KOI Auto Parts with the World of Outlaws.
