Inside Line Promotions – CALISTOGA, Calif. (Sept. 17, 2019) – Dominic Scelzi picked up his fourth top 10 of the season during World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series competition last Saturday at Calistoga Speedway.
The strong run capped the Outlaws final swing through the West Coast and it wrapped up a busy three-race week in which Scelzi improved his result each night.
Last week’s action began on Wednesday at Placerville Speedway in Placerville, Calif., during the 49er Gold Rush Classic presented by Riebes NAPA Auto Parts. He qualified 20th quickest, placed ninth in a heat race and rallied for a fourth-place result in the Last Chance Showdown before ending the night early in the A Main.
“I felt like we were just off all day,” he said. “We changed a lot of stuff and just really struggled all night long. We were really tight and I ended up pulling off in the feature.”
Friday was a step forward during the NOS Energy Drink Showdown at Stockton at Stockton Dirt Track in Stockton, Calif., where Scelzi timed in ninth quickest before he finished fifth in a heat race and 20th in the main event.
“We timed in pretty well, but didn’t get a very good start on the bottom in the heat race,” he said. “We spun our tires and fell to fifth right away. In the main event we were really, really tight. I couldn’t turn the race car and was fighting it so I pulled off.”
The best night came on Saturday as Calistoga Speedway hosted the Wine Country Outlaw Showdown. Scelzi qualified second quickest out of the 22 competitors. A third-place result in a heat race lined him up on the outside of the fourth row for the feature.
“We got the jump on the start of the heat and I ran around the bottom on the first corner,” he said. “The previous heat had been won down there, but the top was better and I fell to third in turn two. I wish I would have slid to the top and got going. We were good enough to win.
“In the main event we started eighth. We were good, but it was very hard to pass. We ran eighth most of the race before getting seventh toward the end. It felt really good. The California swing was a disappointment for me because I had a lot of high hopes. We didn’t reach our goals. To be able to run seventh, which I believe we were better than seventh, I’m happy with it after the way the last two weeks have gone.”
Scelzi’s seventh-place result marked his 32nd top 10 of the season and fourth during World of Outlaws competition.
He will venture east with the series to compete this Friday and Saturday at Dodge City Raceway Park in Dodge City, Kan., during the Outlaw Boot Hill Showdown. It will be his debut at the track.
“It looks like a fun track,” he said. “It’s not a big half mile or a quarter-mile bullring. It should be a fun challenge. Plus, I think we’re on the right track with our race car.”
