Sides Battles Bad Luck Throughout Nittany Showdown at Port Royal Speedway

Inside Line Promotions – PORT ROYAL, Pa. (Oct. 30, 2019) – Misfortune struck last Friday at Port Royal Speedway for Jason Sides, who was nearly involved in a crash during heat race action before being caught up in a wreck during the Last Chance Showdown.
Sides opened the Nittany Showdown by qualifying 10th quickest in his World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series group.
“I felt good about it,” he said. “It was heavy and the track was only halfway up. The track wasn’t very wide, but was fast for everybody. I felt like we could be in there and make the show.”
Sides started fourth in a heat race and was battling for one of the three lock-in positions into the A Main at the start of the heat when a driver nearly spun out directly in front of Sides, who was forced to take evasive action to avoid an incident. That cost Sides several positions on the fast track and an eighth-place result relegated him to the Last Chance Showdown.
The consolation race didn’t fare any better for Sides, who was involved in a multiple-car crash on the opening lap. It ended his night early.
“I saw tire smoke when someone got into the wall and I lifted a little to try to turn down,” he said. “About that time I’m sure they were bottling up behind us. They started running over the back of me. The last thing I saw was Freddie Rahmer got over a tire and went flying.
“It bent our frame, tore the front axle up, killed the tail tank. It didn’t touch either wing, but got everything else.”
Saturday’s event finale rained out after qualifying.
Sides will be off this weekend before wrapping up the season Nov. 7-9 at The Dirt Track at Charlotte in Concord, N.C., during the Can-Am World Finals with the World of Outlaws.
