Last Lap Passes Abound at Wisconsin Sprint Car Championships

Bill Balog once again used a last corner pass to beat Tony Stewart, while Ryan Zielski went 4 wide at the flag stand to pick up the Wisconsin wingLESS victory on a night that saw the largest non co-sanctioned event purse in IRA history, largest count of sprint cars in the state of Wisconsin and multiple series champions crowned.

All eyes were on the Plymouth Dirt Track for night two of the Wisconsin Sprint Car Championships, as well as the final night of both the Rocky Rococo Pizza Challenge and the Hopf Farms Bullring Showdown, all in honor of Roy Fenske, Frank Filskov, Rick Schmidt and former IRA officials Dick Whitt and Dick Symoens. Jake Blackhurst entered the night with just a 15 point lead over Scotty Thiel for the IRA championship and that would be the battle everyone kept their eyes on.
Scotty Thiel set quick time in qualifying over Bill Balog and Phillip Mock. Mike Reinke timed in 4th followed by Ben Schmidt. Jake Blackhurst would qualify in 6th, meaning his points lead was cut to just 9 points entering the heat races.

Heat race number one was dominated by Scotty Neitzel, as he led all 10 laps and picked up the win. Mike Reinke would bring the SCA 02 home in 2nd over Brandon McMullen. Scotty Thiel would settle for a 4th place finish over Scott Biertzer.
Sammy Swindell to the initial lead of heat 2 but Tony Stewart muscled his way past the Brandon Thone owned 1 machine to take the lead. Stewart would hold that lead for the duration, fending off multiple challenges from Swindell to take the win. “Slammin Sammy” would be forced to settle with 2nd over Bill Balog and Ben Schmidt. Russel Borland would round out the top 5.
“The Badger” Jason Johnson would take the win in heat race 3 over Jeremy Schultz. Jake Blackhurst would bring his Kitchen Cooked Potato Chips car home in 3rd, bringing his points lead to 10 over Thiel. Steve Meyer and Phillip Mock would finish 4th and 5th respectively.

The winged 410 cars were not the only ones racing for their championship, they were joined by the Auto Meter Wisconsin wingLESS series who with the previous nights top 6 locked into the A main already would run 2 qualifying races to set their feature line up. Greg Olsen would take the lead at the start of the first qualifier, but a yellow flag was thrown and as the field slowed, Olsen jumped a wheel and got upside down. Jimmy Kouba would inherit the lead on the restart. He would hold the lead for the duration of the race, taking home the win over Nathan Crane. Jordan Paulsen would come home in 3rd followed by Douge Schenck and Rod Colburn.
Jordan Mattson would lead every lap of qualifier 2 to lock himself into the feature. Johnny Fahl would finish in 2nd over Chris Klemko and Jimmy Sivia. Derek Crane would finish in the 5th position.

With weather looming on the horizon the winged 410 A main would be up first. Scotty Thiel started on the pole but seemed to get a bad start and quickly fell to 4th. Tony Stewart led the field from the outset. Bill Balog charged to 2nd and began chasing down the Rush Truck Centers 14. Balog trailed Stewart through traffic never seeming to find the opportunity he needed to move past Stewart. That is until the last corner when Balog once again found just enough to pass Tony Stewart exiting turn 4 and stand in victory lane, winning $6000. Stewart would settle for 2nd, but he was crowned the Rocky Rococo Challenge champion. Mike Reinke came home in 3rd ahead of the most watched battle on track as Scotty Thiel brought his Scott Thiel Motorsports 64 across the line in 4th over Jake Blackhurst in 5th. Thiel's fourth place finish would be enough to win him the Hopf Farms Bullring Showdown championship but not enough to claim the IRA season championship. Jake Blackhurst's fifth place finish gave him enough points to stand victorious as season champion by a mere seven markers.

The excitement wasn’t over though, as the wingLESS series still had a feature to be ran. Nick Petska would jump out to the early lead over Ryan Zielski. Chris Dodd settled into 3rd and the trio began to gap the field by just a bit. As lap 16 started it appeared Chris Dodd was about to make his move but the yellow flag came out as rain began to fall on the Plymouth Dirt Track. The track crews never gave up and after a 20 minute delay the track was race ready again and the cars had re-fired. Petska once again led the field as behind him cars jockeyed for position, Petska looked to have the race soundly in his possession until the final lap, as a bobble from him caused the top 4 to cross the line together, and Ryan Zielski came out on top. Jordan Mattson brought his Lien Acres car across in 2nd followed by Chris Dodd and then Nick Petska. Allen Hafford would finish in the 5th position. Tim Cox came home in 6th which would be enough to earn his first series championship with the series.
