Sheldon Scores First All Star Win

July 5, 2014 Orrville, OH: NAPA Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway was just what the doctor ordered for three drivers competing with the University of Northwestern All Star Circuit of Champions on Saturday. Sheldon Haudenschild lives a few miles from the track and raced in front of family, friends and packed house. Wayne County is where he learned to race, where father Jac Haudenschild began his Hall of Fame career, and where Sheldon became an UNOH All Star victor.

"This is where I got my first sprint car win and my first non-wing win and now my first All Star win," said Haudenschild beside Southern Pacific Farms/Butlerbuilt/Simpson/GME/Creative Renovations/Ham Signs XXX. “You could say Wayne County has been pretty special.”

It was not easy for young Haudenschild as he had to contest four-time All Star champion Tim Shaffer in traffic. "I saw his nose a couple of times coming out of four and I just had to cool it down and stay on the bottom. What an awesome week. We got two thirds and an All Star win," added Sheldon, who finished third at Waynesfield on Thursday in Ray Marshall 360 and third Friday at Hilltop in his family 410.

Shaffer settle for his second runner-up in last two UNOH All Star races. "Boy this is just what we needed; what I needed," said Shaffer beside Bryan Grove’s Canton Erectors/Gressman Powersports J&J. After the year we had been having, especially the struggles during Speed Wek, you start questioning yourself. ‘Am I not driving hard enough? Am I making the wrong decisions with the car?’ But we have worked hard and I think a win is coming very soon. Hat’s off to Sheldon. I got to him in traffic and had a shot at him twice. But he did the right things. He found the rubber on the bottom of three and four and he slowed down a bit and hit it just right."

Chad Kemenah, champion of All Stars and Wayne County Speedway, scored third-place. "Boy we needed that bad," said Kemenah of his Radio Hospital/Hampshire Racing Engines/Champion Oil/Lima Auto Mall Maxim. “A win would have been better but after the luck we've had the past two weeks. I'll take a solid night. We set quick time, went forward in our heat and went forward in the dash. We just started too far behind in the feature and it was extremely hard to pass. I could get to Sheldon and Tim in traffic but once it took rubber, you really couldn't move around a lot in three and four to take advantage."

Kemenah explained engine issues of Speed Week at Lima and later. "Hell, at 10:15 last night we were putting another engine together,” said the Findlay driver. “It's just been really stupid things happening. I hope that bad luck is all behind us now."

Sheldon Haudenschild and Shaffer brought field to green in event added to schedule after Ohio Speed Week rain one week prior. Haudenschild led all 30 laps. Behind the lead trio was Derek Hagar, who scored his eleventh sprint car win of 2014 at Hilltop the night before. Lee Jacobs earlier this year earned his second career All Star win at Wayne County and finished fourth. UNOH All Star point leader Dale Blaney ended seventh to end incredible seven-race streak of Top Two finishes.

UNOH ALL Stars now get set to embark on their traditional Thunder through the Plains featuring five nights in the Great Plains states.
