Helms Happy with Progress on Slick Tracks Following All Star Tripleheader

Inside Line Promotions – BEDFORD, Pa. (April 19, 2016) – Caleb Helms is excited about the progress his team showed last weekend during the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions tripleheader.
“I think it was great,” he said. “The results weren’t what we wanted, but I really feel like we put together a clean, full weekend where we were competitive on three different slick race tracks.”
Helms opened the weekend on Friday at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio, where he qualified seventh quickest before winning a heat race to make the dash.
“In the dash the track had slicked off,” he said. “I didn’t quite get in the groove with the car quick enough and we fell to seventh. Then in the feature I really felt like we had a good car and I was running good laps, but less than 10 laps in there wasn’t as much passing. I should have been on the defense instead of the offense. I was trying to do too much.”
Helms ended with a 15th-place result.
He then ventured to Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, Ohio, on Saturday. Helms qualified 16th quickest overall before placing seventh in a heat race. That relegated him to the B Main, which he won to transfer into the 19th starting position for the main event.
“In the feature I felt like we had a really good car and we ran good laps,” he said. “There wasn’t a ton of passing. There were a couple of cars who moved up four spots and fortunately I was one of them.”
Helms scored a 15th-place finish for the second straight night.
The weekend concluded on Sunday at Bedford Speedway, where Helms timed in 30th quickest during qualifying. He ended seventh in a heat race and was in contention to garner a transfer during the B Main when he ran out of fuel on the last lap. That forced him to use a provisional to start at the back of the feature.
“We started out passing more cars early on,” he said. “It turned out that I needed to be on the defense just like at Attica. I was really good early on and then I wasn’t patient enough on the bottom. I kept trying to make something work and it let a couple of cars back by me.”
Helms advanced from 25th to 20th, which was tied for the second-most cars passed.
Helms ranks 10th in All Star points entering this weekend’s races at Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal, Pa., on Saturday and at Selinsgrove Speedway in Selinsgrove, Pa., on Sunday.
