Helms Produces Long-Awaited First Career All Star Win at Wayne County

Inside Line Promotions – ORRVILLE, Ohio (Sept. 5, 2017) – Caleb Helms achieved a life-long goal last Sunday when he captured his first career Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions feature victory during the $10,000-to-win Pete Jacobs Memorial at Wayne County Speedway.
“It’s definitely the biggest win of my career,” he said. “To get an All Star win is something we’ve been working on for years. I’ve been racing with the All Stars off and on since 2012. We struggled a lot and we’ve grown a lot. We’ve come close, but to seal the deal is really sweet. It’s really special for my dad, me and my grandpa. My crew chief, Andy Potter, has been very positive and that support means a lot, along with all of our sponsors. Throughout the trials, believing that I can do it and those other people believing in me has been the biggest thing.”
The night began with Helms qualifying 13th quickest overall and second best in his group. He then advanced from third to second place in a heat race to earn a spot in a dash. Helms finished where he started – third – in the dash to line up fifth for the 35-lap main event.
“We made an adjustment with what we were doing with the car, which helped us get the car tighter like we needed to,” he said. “In the feature I got a good start and ran the bottom the first lap. I got underneath Cale Conley and I was racing behind Chad (Kemenah) in fourth. He went into turn three and got into rough stuff so we got around him. A yellow came out and we were in third a few laps in.”
Helms spent approximately the next dozen laps contending for the lead as the top three drivers traded positions a number of times. Helms was running third on Lap 18 when the top two drivers, Joey Saldana and Danny Mumaw, made contact and spun to a stop.
“I was right on their tail,” Helms said. “Joey was getting ready to pass Mumaw underneath. He came off the curb and they came together trying to work through traffic. The yellow came out and I was sitting in first.
“We went a few laps after the restart before I caught traffic. I was good off turns one and two running the top. In turns three and four I started out running the middle above some rough stuff. I felt like I was losing ground. (Tim) Shaffer was catching me and I saw him once or twice. A yellow came out and after that, when I had clean air, I was able to make better laps. I think I was running my best laps at the end of the race.”
Helms capitalized on the late-race caution as he led the final 18 laps to garner the triumph.
The weekend began on Saturday at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio, where Helms timed in 17th quickest during qualifying. He powered from fourth to win the first heat race and he ended sixth in the second heat to lock into the 13th starting position for the All Star main event.
“We were pretty good, but it seemed like I got stuck in the wrong place at the wrong time a lot of times,” he said. “We didn’t end up where we wanted to. We made it through the night and we learned a bit from that, which we took to Wayne County.”
Helms, who ended 13th at Attica Raceway Park, will return to action this Friday and Saturday at Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal, Pa., for the Tuscarora 50 with the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions.
