Inside Line Promotions – ROSSBURG, Ohio (July 24, 2019) – Greg Wilson captured his first top-five finish of the season during World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series competition last Wednesday at Eldora Speedway.
Wilson and his Hercules Tires, DNC Hydraulics, Ohio Logistics and Gear Off Road backed team kicked off four straight nights of action at the half-mile oval by qualifying fifth quickest in group action, placing third in a heat race and maneuvering from ninth to fifth in the A Main.
“I’ve never been a good qualifier,” he said. “We drew a good pill and qualified good. It seems like if we can qualify decent we end up in the front of the field. I was pretty excited because I know all the work we’re doing and changes we’ve made is going in the right direction.”
It was the highlight of a busy week that featured approximately 60 competitors each night. Qualifying got the team behind on Thursday and Friday before qualifying too good – 10th quickest – on Saturday was harmful at the Kings Royal.
“I knew it wasn’t going to be easy with that caliber of cars there,” he said. “The rest of the weekend seemed like we were just okay. We had some mechanical issues on Thursday and Friday. Nothing major, but it hurt us early in the night. It was just racing things. We fixed all that for Saturday and got a good pill draw. I joked with some people that our normal 28th quick would have been perfect with the heat race inversion. Instead we were 10th quick out of 62 cars. I think we’re making the right stride in qualifying, but it really hurt us on Saturday.”
Wilson placed seventh in a heat race before charging from fourth to second in the C Main and from 20th to 12th in the Last Chance Showdown.
“We got the car really good in the C Main,” he said. “We changed the car around a little for the B Main. Realistically you’ll need an extreme amount of luck to transfer starting 20th. So we tried some stuff and left thinking when we go back this fall it’ll be interesting to see if we’ve learned what we thought we’ve learned.”
Wilson returns to Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions competition this week with four straight races running Thursday at Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, Wis.; Friday at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn.; Saturday at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa; and Sunday at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa.
“I’m pretty excited,” he said. “Two of the tracks, Plymouth and 34 Raceway, I’ve never been to. We’ve had some good runs at Jackson and to get any extra laps at Knoxville is good. With all the changes we made seven or eight races ago we’re making good strides. We’re getting closer and I’m excited to see what the next couple of weeks brings.”
Wilson enters this week ranked sixth in the All Star championship standings – only 22 points out of the top five.
Wilson’s next Hercules Tires dealership visit is Tuesday at Bessinger’s Automotive in Pacific, Mo., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
