TANKERSLEY READY FOR BATTLEGROUND SPEEDWAY
Inside Line Promotions – HIGHLANDS, Texas (April 25) – Fingers crossed.
At this stage, that’s about all Channin Tankersley can do when he rolls onto the track. The 20-year-old from Highlands, Texas, spent last week rebuilding his sprint car and on Saturday night did some testing at his hometown track of Battleground Speedway in Highlands.
“Ready to rock and roll now,” he said. “Finishing and not tearing anything up is really our main goal right now.”
Tankersley, who has been caught up in a wreck or had a parts failure in nearly all of his races this season, resumes competition this Saturday with the ASCS Gulf South Region at Battleground Speedway – a 3/8th-mile, semi-banked oval that is literally one minute from his home.
“It’s sad to say, but I’ve almost declared myself out of the points chase right now,” Tankersley said. “I think if we can rattle off a lot of top fives this year, we might have a run at it. But if we keep having stuff go wrong, it’ll be tough.”
After an engine issue kept him from racing in the last ASCS Gulf South event, Tankersley dropped to eighth in the standings – 153 points out of first. With 20 scheduled races remaining for the region, Tankersley said his only shot at the championship is with consistent top-five finishes the rest of the season.
That’s more than possible at Battleground Speedway, where Tankersley placed 13th and third in two races last season. His third-place finish started a streak of a handful of top fives at the end of last summer and Tankersley is hoping for a similar fortune starting this weekend.
