Inside Line Promotions – HIGHLANDS, Texas (July 9, 2014) – Channin Tankersley survived a weekend that could have produced disastrous results.

However, Tankersley’s results of 11th and fourth, respectively, keep him at the top of the ASCS Gulf South Region championship standings by 76 points with only seven races remaining this season.

“Our ultimate goal is to have a good shot at winning the championship,” he said. “But you just have that one bad night and it’ll wipe out the cushion you have.”

Tankersley thought that was the case last Friday at Shady Oaks Speedway in Goliad, Texas. After winning his heat race to advance into the feature redraw, where he pulled the No. 7 in the random draw, Tankersley was in contention for a top five in the main event.

Unfortunately, the engine began to overheat during a caution with nine laps remaining. Tankersley exited the track thinking it was going to be a huge hit in points.

“On Friday we had a good top five going and the car just got to overheating,” he said. “I pulled off to save the motor. There was no sense in burning the motor up running fifth and sixth. It got to where I was not very comfortable running it. I took one for the team and pulled in.”

At that point there were only 11 cars remaining, which credited Tankersley with an 11th-place finish and a loss of only 14 points to the second-place driver in the standings.

He gained back five of those points on Saturday at Battleground Speedway, where he maneuvered from third to win his heat race and advance into the feature redraw. There he pulled the No. 3 to line up on the inside of the second row.

“I kinda missed it in the A Main Saturday night,” he said. “I ran third for about half of the race. We had a restart and I don’t know if the car went away or what. I jumped the cushion one lap and the car just wasn’t the same. We fell back to sixth or seventh. Toward the end of the race the car started getting a little better.”

Tankersley made a late bid for a podium as he rallied into third place on the final lap before ending with a fourth-place result.

He is taking this weekend off before the next ASCS Gulf South Region events – July 18 at Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, Texas, and July 19 at Leesville 171 Speedway in Leesville, La.
