Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (Aug. 20, 2014) – Channin Tankersley is coming off another consistent weekend with the ASCS Gulf South Region.
Tankersley, who leads the region in top-10 finishes, added two more last weekend in Texas to extend his championship standings lead to 109 points with only three races remaining.
“We had a solid weekend,” he said. “That gave us a little cushion in the points, but not too much to where I’m comfortable.”
Tankersley finished where he started – third – in his heat race both nights, which lined him up on the sixth row of the main event on Friday at Heart O’Texas Speedway in Waco and on Saturday at Devil’s Bowl Speedway.
“Friday night was a lot smoother,” he said. “I think I passed more cars under caution than I did in the actual race. By the time we finally got one lap in I was starting on the third row inside. They had a bunch of carnage. That was seven free cars I got to pass so I’m not complaining. The track looked like it was pretty good and then it blew off really quick. I think everybody went out there and was too free so everybody was spinning out or knocking the wall down.”
After advancing from 12th into the top five before the opening lap was completed, Tankersley stuck to the bottom groove on the slick track.
“I was pretty much rubbing the paint off the infield tires,” he said. “I got off the bottom one time to try it and almost got passed. After that I was trucking around the bottom.”
Tankersley ended with a runner-up result, which marked his 11th top five of the season.
The weekend concluded on Saturday, when track conditions were the opposite in the main event at Devil’s Bowl Speedway.
“The track was super heavy and fast all night,” he said. “It was one of those deals where we finished where we started just about. I think I got two guys on the start and after that it was follow the leader until they had a caution with about 10 laps to go. I got two more guys on the restart and then it was follow the leader again. We salvaged a seventh place.”
The seventh-place result was Tankersley’s 18th top 10 this season and his 15th with the ASCS Gulf South Region.
The next region event is Aug. 30 at Leesville 171 Speedway in Leesville, La.
