Pokorski Motorsports looks ahead to MSA doubleheader

Pokorski Motorsports endures forgettable weekend

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) June 1, 2016 – A holiday weekend Sprint Car racing doubleheader at the Plymouth Dirt Track and 141 Speedway turned out to be one that Paul Pokorski and his Pokorski Motorsports team would like to put in the rearview mirror as quickly as possible.

After recording a pair of top 10 finishes in the first two events of the 2016 season at The Plymouth Dirt Track, the blue Pokorski Motorsports No. 4 Sprint Car failed to qualify for the A main on Saturday, May 28.

Highly challenging track conditions proved to confound each of the 33 Sprint Car teams in the pit area, as a dry slick track for the heat races yielded to a very rough track surface for B and A main competition later in the evening.

Pokorski started fourth the third Sprint Car heat race in Plymouth Dirt Track Racing action on Saturday night. On lap 2, contact with Wayne Modjeski’s car, dropped Pokorski back to fifth place in the running order.

Two laps later, Pokorski attempted to move to the high groove in an effort to make up some ground and earn a spot in the A main. However, the extremely dry slick track conditions produced almost exclusively single-file racing along the low groove. Pokorski fell back to seventh on lap five and held on to that position at the finish line.

The seventh-place finish in the heat race put Pokorski in the first of two B main events, where he started seventh. Needing to finish third or better in order to transfer to the A main, Pokorski attempted to use the high groove to gain the positions he needed.

However, a spin in turn three halted Pokorski’s progress in the early going. After restarting seventh, Pokorski worked past Doug Pietz and Nich Melis in the closing laps to place fifth, two spots out of a transfer position.

“It was definitely one of the toughest nights we’ve had,” Pokorski Motorsports Crew Chief Dave Schultz said. “The track was very difficult, which kept us guessing. We were down on crew help too on Saturday night, which added to the challenges. The bottom line is, as the crew chief I just didn’t give Paul the car he needed to be successful.”

Things didn’t turn out any better for the team on Sunday, May 29, as it competed with the Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car Series at the 141 Speedway in Francis Creek.

Pokorski qualified 27th in the 28-car IRA field, before starting and finishing ninth in the third IRA heat race.

In the B main, Pokorski lined up in the ninth starting spot. Pokorski out dragged Chris Clayton to maintain the ninth-place position in the early going. On lap 3, Pokorski spun his machine in turn 4.

After restarting at the back of the field, Pokorski waged a spirited battle with Clayton for ninth place. On lap 9, Clayton surged ahead as Pokorski held on to place 10th, four spots out of a transfer position to the A main.

“The weekend stunk,” Pokorski said. “Sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug! But we won't give up and we're going to try some different things for this weekend at Manitowoc and probably at Plymouth also. We are hoping for much better results.”

A doubleheader weekend is on tap for Pokorski Motorsports team with the first of six scheduled MSA appearances at the Manitowoc Speedway on Friday, June 3. The following night, the Pokorski Motorsports team will return to the Plymouth Dirt Track on Saturday, June 4.
